Technician, Maintenance Electrical

Responsibilities:

This position is part of the Electrical Distribution Team at the Chocolate Bayou facility.  The EDS Technician is to perform as a skilled craftsman in completing electrical testing and preventive maintenance, some troubleshooting and repairs to the electrical distribution systems. The EDS Technician will focus on the following areas:

  • Make safety a top priority and uphold the 20 safety principles, Life Saving Rules, and plant procedures and policies at all times.
  • Support the company’s visions and values.
  • Act as a leader within the Maintenance group towards the Electrical Safety Program & NFPA 70E.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance (PM) on electrical distribution systems (138kV down to 480V Motor Control Centers main breakers) including creating custom tests, utilizing special test equipment, following established procedures, manufacturer’s recommendations, and recognized industry standards on the following types of equipment:
    • Electro/Mechanical and Microprocessor Protective Relays
    • Switchgear Circuit Breakers
    • Distribution Transformers
    • Air Break and SF6 Switches
    • SF6 Breakers
    • Current and Potential Transformers
    • Power Cables
    • Grounding Systems
    • Station Batteries and Chargers
  • In-depth knowledge in the testing and PM’s of electrical substations (138kV).
  • In-depth knowledge in the operation, programming, and safe execution of the following (but not limited to) test equipment:
    • Raytech – WR14 Winding Resistance
    • Megger-S1-568 Insulation Resistance
    • HV Diagnostics Tan-delta/VLF cable test set
    • Vangaurd- TRF250-3 TTR
    • Doble-M4100
    • DLRO
    • Hand-held multimeters and current clamp on meters
  • Analyze test data, recommend corrective actions, and develop appropriate response by coordinating with E/I Reliability Team, E/I Maintenance, and/or outside contractors.
  • Generate detailed technical reports, problems found, and corrective action taken or recommended and coordinating with the Electrical Reliability Engineering.
  • Participating in cross-functional teams to identify and solve ongoing reliability problems to increase plant reliability and availability.
  • Communicate effectively with the team on a regular basis regarding status and scheduling.
  • Assist Electrical Reliability Engineering in the creation of Scopes-of-Work, JSA’s, & coordinate job walk-throughs with specialty contractors.  This may include the following:
    • Scoping, estimating and executing small capital projects and plant alterations
    • Participating in contractor selection and management of contractor execution/performance
  • Perform job responsibility in obtaining safe work permits, reviewing JSA’s, LOTO for contractors as a “job rep,” & perform QA/QC oversight of contractors.
  • Perform all duties as a qualified electrical worker according to NFPA 70E – one that has demonstrated skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of electrical equipment and installations and has received safety training to identify and avoid the hazards involved.
  • Create switching orders; plan and execute high voltage and distribution system switching and isolation.
  • Provide technical expertise in the troubleshooting of 480V/5kV motors/motor control circuits & motor protection relay programming/interrogation.
  • Technical liaison to the maintenance & operations groups.
  • Provide input on selection of equipment, review, and approval of specifications to support capital projects.
  • Identify appropriate spare parts for equipment. 
  • Other duties as required

Specific Skill Requirements -

  • Use PCs/mainframe computers to maintain records of calibrations, SPC charts, part ordering, etc.
  • Communicate with co-workers, team leader, and other departments on status of projects and equipment (verbally and/or in writing).
  • Required to maintain a constant awareness of personal safety and the safety of other personnel.  This includes knowledge of procedures and rules.
  • Responsible for maintaining housekeeping in area of responsibility.
  • Plant level experience and understanding of one-line diagrams, motor and breaker control schematics, P&IDs, instrumentation loop drawings, and logic controller terminology, and Industry Standards (NFPA, NEC, ISA, IEC, API, ANSI, IEEE, etc.).
  • Ability to work overtime.
  • Experience working with multiple engineering disciplines, as well as contractors.
  • Must be a self-starter and capable of working on an individual basis and in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work and deliver quality results on time.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills required.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Required Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Required Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of five (5) years full-time practical experience in the high voltage industry. The last 2+ years’ experience must be in testing and preventative maintenance of high voltage substations and electrical distribution systems.

OR

  • Successful completion of a two (2) year Associates in Electrical or Electronics Technology
  • NETA Certified Technician is a plus. 
  • Must be able to acquire a TWIC card

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using SAP or other electronic scheduling, data base software.
