Organizational Context:

The La Porte PAO plant has two summer internships available for the summer of 2023!  The site would like to host one Chemical Engineering student and one Mechanical Engineering student for a nine-week internship duration.

With manufacturing facilities in United States and Belgium, INEOS Oligomers is the largest merchant suppliers of Poly Alpha Olefins (“PAO”) in the world. The LaPorte PAO site is a fully self-contained operating plant within a larger petrochemical complex, shared with LyondellBasell. The LaPorte site consists of three production units capable of producing twenty-four different products spanning a broad viscosity range using multiple feeds.

Purpose of the job:

During this internship the student will be partnered with the operations or engineering departments (based on degree being pursued).  The intern will be assigned a term project in addition to hands on day-to-day work representative of the profession.  Typical responsibilities of engineering intern would be:

  • Abide by site safety policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for promoting safety leadership through the implementation of the INEOS 20 principles. 
  • Assist in updating isometric drawings per management of change procedure.
  • Design and execute small capital projects <$100k.
  • Assist in updating ISOs per MOCs.
  • Able to interpret and walk down P&IDs.
  • Review maintenance manuals and define preventative maintenance plans for equipment.
  • Work with equipment vendors to establish spare parts lists.
  • Enter information into PSAIM (Piping and Vessel Inspection Database).
  • Organize and catalog historical operating or maintenance documents.
  • Provide engineering support to operations and technical departments.
  • Participate in process engineering and design projects to optimize plant performance.
  • Assist in safety activities including Lock Out Tag Out, RCA’s, HAZOP’s, etc. as available.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Required Skills, Education or Experience:

  • 3rd or 4th year Mechanical/Chemical Engineering student
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Exposure to CAD drawings and P&IDs
