The Position: Site Director  -

To lead and manage the daily operations of the Sarnia Site focusing on safety, environmental compliance and performance. To lead and motivate site staff and to represent the site in contact with external parties.

The incumbent is the most senior position in Canada on the plant site. All other positions report either directly to this role or to one of the direct reports.  This position reports to the Americas Sr. VP of Global Styrene Manufacturing, who reports to the INEOS Styrolution Americas President – Styrene Monomer Global Business Unit and is one of 5 Americas Site Directors. The Sarnia facility is one of four global styrene monomer units in INEOS Styrolution.

The Site Director assumes overall accountability as the Asset Manager for the Operating areas of Sarnia Site Asset Owner Plot Plan.

What you will do: 

SHE Excellence/Loss Control Management

  • This position – and all positions – within the INEOS Styrolution organization requires that the incumbent commit to learning, following and practicing the INEOS Styrolution 20 Principles of Process and Behavioral Safety as applicable to the position.  Each employee must also commit to following the INEOS Styrolution Life-Saving rules and the site SHE Policies and Procedures including Stop Work Authority and Safe Work Guidelines on a daily basis.
    • The Site Champion of the 20 Principles and Life Saving Rules.
  • Accountable for the development and implementation of site programs for compliance of units governed by Federal and State regulations, PSM facility compliance, internal INEOS SHE requirements, hazardous chemical handling, and regulatory requirements around site security.
  • Assure SHE & PSM targets are met and continuously improve.
  • Implement and monitor a comprehensive SHE management process including audits, corrective action tracking, and incident investigation.

Manufacturing Excellence: reliability, cost control, monitoring and improving

  • Continuous improvement of plant reliability and capacity
  • Operation of plant to achieve manufacturing objectives in alignment with business requirements
  • Accountable for all manufacturing costs for the Sarnia site such as: fixed costs including personnel, maintenance, spare parts inventory, overtime, yields & usages, etc., and variable costs consumption and control (raw materials and utilities consumption).
  • Continuous improvement of plant reliability and capacity
  • Actively seek and implement best practices from across the styrene monomer assets.

Long term strategy & competitiveness of the Sarnia site

  • Develop and update site strategy in line with business objectives
  • Develop and implement plans to improve cost structure
  • Participate in the Styrene Monomer Business Management team and lead specific initiatives involving cross-functional teams

Site Management Duties

  • Emergency response preparedness, crisis & media communication
  • Maintain good contacts with all local stakeholders including regulatory agencies and the community.
  • Lead/supervise direct reports and monitor the cascading of leadership and management competencies throughout the organization
  • Develop effective succession/career development plans for the site
  • Cost control of site’s capex programs
  • Network with other industry colleagues
  • Close coordination/communication with the key business stakeholders to ensure alignment of plant operations with business requirements

What you will bring: 

Level of education & Experience in general

  • BS degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, relevant plant operation experience and experience in other manufacturing aspects in general (safety, environmental compliance, maintenance, cost analysis, budgeting, technical management, people management). 
  • At least fifteen years of experience in a petrochemical environment.

Technical skills

  • Broad understanding of chemical operations
  • Experience in operations of high hazardous plants
  • Experience and knowledge of maintenance and reliability practices
  • Experience and knowledge of governmental regulation of chemical process operation
  • Business Acumen
  • Knowledge of safety and quality management systems
  • Conversancy with tools and practices necessary to build a culture that drives incident-free operations
  • Experience working in union environment is highly desirable

Physical demands:

  • Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
  • Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens and to adjust focus and to receive detailed information through oral communication, make discriminations in sound, and perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction. 
  • This position is considered a “safety critical job”, which requires for the employee to be always alert, able to concentrate on their task at hand, and not impaired by medications (prescription, non-prescription, illegal or legal substances including alcohol), or any other mental condition which adversely affects alertness, concentration, or judgment.
  • Must be physically capable of performing in a field environment, including the wearing of respiratory protection. Must pass a post offer physical and drug screen.
