The Position:

The SHE Specialist is responsible for assisting Addyston to achieve and maintain compliance with Styrolution SHE polices and applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements, employee safety programs, and process safety regulations compliance through understanding, monitoring, and documenting. 

This jobholder creates and maintains safety programs that will minimize injuries and illnesses, exceed compliance with regulatory requirements, maintain site emergency response services, and oversee regulatory inspections of fire suppression equipment and direct facility security, to create a safe, secure, and prepared workforce. 

INEOS ABS is an affiliate of INEOS Styrolution, with both companies being wholly owned by INEOS AG. The INEOS ABS manufacturing facility produces plastic polymers and is located in Addyston, OH, just outside of Cincinnati, OH.

What you will do:

Safety and Health

  • Design, implement, and monitor site employee safety programs to eliminate or minimize employee injuries.
  • Be the point contact for operations and maintenance safety concerns in assigned area with a focus to understand, resolve, and if necessary, elevate to the SHE manager.
  • Maintain site Safety, Security, Health, and Environmental procedures up to date with applicable regulatory requirements and internal compliance requirements (IGGNs, SGGNs, and the Styrolution 20 Behavioral and Process Safety Principles).
  • Identify and evaluate safety and health hazards that could create risks for our employees and contractors, communicate these risks, and develop compliance and control strategies to minimize them.
  • Evaluate and proactively respond to leading and lagging safety and health indicators to address safety and health issues
  • Review regulatory agency, occupational health and industry association publications, and corporate guidelines to identify potential safety and health hazard risks and address accordingly.
  • Maintain compliance with HAZCOM and GHS.
    • Ensure necessary labeling of containers.
    • Communicate health hazard information to plant employees and customers as needed.
  • Ensure the site maintains compliance with OSHA and facility mandated industrial hygiene programs for new and current employees in order to maintain a healthy work force.
  • Evaluate potential exposure risks for new raw materials, new supply materials, new processes and any process modifications.
  • Oversee management and adherence to respiratory protection requirements.
    • Check and maintain all Plant SCBA equipment (tanks full, masks clean, regulators working).
    • Conduct new hire and plantwide SCBA, Respirator, PAPR, and Escape Air training, as applicable. 

Emergency Response

  • Oversee development and implementation of annual emergency response training plans.
  • Serve as facility Emergency Response Training Coordinator/Fire Chief and be available for emergency calls.
  • Develop, lead, and deliver site emergency response training to the ERT/ECT to comply with INEOS and regulatory requirements
  • Schedule and conduct site emergency drills for the ERT/ECT to comply with INEOS and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure all qualifications are obtained and maintained for the ERT.
  • Coordinate emergency activities with Local Emergency Planning Committee, Miami Township Fire Department, and Hamilton County Emergency Response Services including serving as site contact. 
  • Assists the Incident Commander during site emergencies.
  • Work with Incident Commander to ensure the safety of all responding personnel during an emergency.
  • Critique all emergency drills and real emergencies for continued improvement in Emergency Response activities. 

Facility Security Officer

  • Ensure compliance of the Maritime Transportation Security Act through daily review of submitted reports.
  • Schedule, conduct, and critique required drills and exercises.
  • Schedule the annual internal Facility Security Plan audit.
  • Manage USCG security audit.
  • Manage the site TWIC program including maintaining an accurate list of TWIC holders and assisting those who are required to obtain a TWIC Card.
  • Maintain an accurate list of all employees who have TWIC credentials.
  • Manage 3rd party contractor security officers.
  • Complete required Facility Security Vulnerability Assessments and Facility Security Assessments.
  • Provide security training to employees.
  • Interface with community and government agencies on Security related issues, including serving as the site contact with the US Coast Guard, Addyston Police, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies
  • Primary point of contact for the Coast Guard as it pertains to TWIC and MARSEC Level changes.

Fire Suppression and Emergency Response Systems

  • Responsible for the oversight and readiness of the INEOS Plant Safety Systems (Fire Water and Emergency Response safety equipment) and be available for emergency calls.
  • Coordinate Facility Fire System and Extinguisher inspections with contractors and maintain up to date. 
  • Understand and diagnose problems on Fire Alarm System and work with facility maintenance and contractors to schedule required inspections and facilitate repairs. 
  • Field check, monitor equipment, supplies, and schedule maintenance as needed on Emergency Response equipment.
  • Monitor water levels, winterize, and check for leaks on the plant fire water tanks.
  • Test and maintain electric and diesel fire pump records and keep fuel oil tanks adequately filled.
  • Clean and maintain firehouse, deluge houses, and fire pump buildings. 
  • Conduct new hire and plantwide fire extinguisher and fire hose training, as applicable.

What you will bring:

  • 5 years or more of demonstrated experience in a manufacturing environment (preferably chemical manufacturing).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, occupational or industrial safety, chemistry, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Must be physically capable of performing Safety/IH duties in a field environment, including the wearing of respiratory protection.
  • Knowledgeable in SHE Technical Areas is preferred.
  • RCRA hazardous waste knowledge is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of various sprinkler and deluge systems and special protection systems (Halon, dry chemical, smoke detection) is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of how to prevent site freezing issues is preferred. 
  • Experience facilitating testing with inspectors and working with outside contractors on repairs, updates, and new installs is preferred. 
  • Demonstrates understanding of operations
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to correctly interpret and apply SHE regulations.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft and Adobe software and ability to develop competency in the use of ancillary software applications used by the site.

Physical demands:

  • Must be able to frequently work at a moderate pace.
  • Must be able to occasionally sit, stand, walk, ascend and descend stairs, bend, stoop, twist, work around extreme heat or cold, high noise levels over 85 Db, at heights, around dusts/mist/fumes, on wet or damp walking or work surfaces, around chemicals (AN, Bd, Styrene, MA and others).
  • Must be able to ascend and descend caged ladders, turn valve/wrench handles, kneel/crouch/crawl, reach above shoulder height, reach at or below shoulder height, work with vibratory tools, do confined space entry, work in cramped quarters, operate vehicles, work with automated machinery and work around allergens (dust, latex, etc.). 
  • Must be able to work outside 50% of the time. Must work with others 50% of the time, use ½ face respirator, full face respirator, PAPR (Powered Air Purified Respirator), SCBA, or Escape Air Pack, wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, long sleeves, hearing protection, fall protection and other PPE as warranted.
  • Must be able to lift (pushing & pulling effort while stationary) 10-20 lbs. approximately 1 time a day and carry (pushing & pulling effort while walking) 10-20 lbs. approximately 2 times a day.
  • Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens and to adjust focus and to receive detailed information through oral communication, make discriminations in sound, and perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction. 
  • This position is considered a “safety critical job”, which requires for the employee to be always alert, able to concentrate on their task at hand, and not impaired by medications (prescription, non-prescription, illegal or legal substances including alcohol), or any other mental condition which adversely affects alertness, concentration, or judgment.
