Organizational context and job purpose

INEOS Nitriles is a global chemicals business with sales volume of 1200 kte and revenue in excess of $2.4 billion. The Nitriles products include acrylonitrile, hydrogen cyanide, acetonitrile, and acrylonitrile catalyst.

Nitriles Aurora site hosts the Research and Technology group (RD&T), and the US commercial teams. The RD&T group has global responsibility for Nitriles manufacturing technical support, including problem solving, process improvements, major project support, TAR support and AN Catalyst development as well as sales and licensing support. The incumbent is part of the Site Management Team, reports directly to the Aurora Site Manager/Head of RD&T.

The Total Quality Management System shall be incorporated into all job activities.  All job activities should be executed in a safe and efficient manner consistent with the INEOS 20 Principles.

A change agent. An experienced SHE professional in the petrochemical industry who is willing and have been driving practical changes in SHE function for resource- efficient R&D facility safe operations, with demonstrated direct and indirect team leadership.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • BS/MS degree in Chemistry, Safety, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science or equivalent
  • 10+ years combined experience in SHE, chemical lab and/or pilot plant operations, with 5+ years SHE experience in commercial chemical R&D/pilot facilities, with an understanding of issues related to specific types of chemistry, equipment, unit operations and maintenance preferred
  • A Certified Safety Professional Certification

Skills/Competencies

Technical skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage work priorities to deliver real performance improvements
  • Strong computing and analytical skills (MS suite, SharePoint, SHE management platforms such as inventory, SDS, regulatory etc.)
  • Experience with PHA software (PHAWorks, PHA LEADER® or equivalent) and Management of Change platforms (Gensuite, Tenforce or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of safety, environmental, and industrial hygiene systems and the proactive application of new techniques to improve SHE performance
  • Experience interfacing with governmental authorities (OSHA, IEMA, IEPA, DOT, DHS, etc.)
  • Detailed knowledge of SHE codes and industry standards as applied to petrochemical facilities, Process Safety Management (PSM), Management of Change process, and environmental regulations
  • Experience in Crisis Management or Incident Command System preferred

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

SHE Stewardship

  • Maintain safety as the highest priority and abide by all INEOS safety policies and procedures.
  • Understand and promote the INEOS “20 Principles of Safety”, assuring that personnel are aware of safe working practices and promote the safety concepts of “Coaching for Safety” and “Stop Work”.
  • Promote safety and safe actions by example and through communication such as discussing safety with employees/contractors before job task, during meetings, and as opportunities arise to promote safety to the fullest extent possible.
  •    Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental   

   regulatory requirements and strive to meet internal  

   SHE objectives.

Work Duties

  • Develop and Manage SHE excellence Systems
    • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive SHE systems and management processes including operational audits, corrective action tracking, Management of Change (MOC), training and incident investigation, participates and leads PSR (process safety reviews), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), and/or Task Hazard assessment.
    • Manage contracts with occupational, medical and other SHE service providers
    • Lead the site INEOS Safety Network (ISN), participate in individual team safety meetings, New Employee Safety Orientation, represent INEOS on site SHE governing committees, be the face of all Regulatory Agencies when visiting the site
  • Develop and Manage SHE Compliance Systems
    • Lead the preparation of SHE compliance program, identify gaps in process and lead groups to close them
    • SPA for site Compliance Task Management and annual letter of Assurance to the Board
    • Leads, develops, and maintains site SHE policy and procedures
    • Provide consultation for safety for pilot plant operations and laboratory standard from the perspective of SHE compliance and best practices
    • Assure that COW permits are in compliance in accordance with Site and regulatory requirements
    • Ensure that site and business meets SHE objectives and comply with all relevant laws and policies
    • Stay current on proposed SHE codes, standards, regulations, and guidelines to determine the impact on current and future programs and activities
  • Develop and manage all SHE Training
    • Provide or arrange SHE training for the Aurora site on the INEOS Compliance manual
    • Train site personnel to identify risk and develop and implement control methodology
    • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive security training protocol to meet Site, Homeland Security (DHS), and Cybersecurity requirements
    • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive training system including development of training topics and materials, maintain accurate training database, refresher training schedules, contractor and new employee training and assurance that employee training is current
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of training resources and materials and provide continuous improvement
  • Manage SHE documentation and reporting
    • Provide ongoing SHE and support for the PSM governed operations
    • Responsible for implementing EXCO/Board new SHE related initiatives (e.g. Asset Care, 20 Principles)
    • Ensure that required certifications, permits limitations and reporting exceedance as well as all environmental reporting are completed in a timely manner
    • Maintain and manage all regulatory documentation for the Aurora site (IEMA, DOT, ILEPA, OSHA, RCRA, IATA)
    • Champion Site safety database including near misses, action items and audits and provide trends and Champion Action Tracking System
    • Maintain OSHA-300 log and notification for Aurora INEOS Nitriles
    • Determines the recordability/reportability of SHE illness or injury
  • SPA for Industrial Hygiene Monitoring
    • Manages IH program, Chemical Hygiene program, Hazardous waste program, Compliance program
    • Perform or participate in audits / inspections / environmental surveillance / Industrial Hygiene monitoring and use findings to target coaching, communications, and training to achieve consistent application, performance improvements, and regulatory compliance
    • Advice on Product Stewardship issues (SDS, TSCA, DOT, etc.)
    • Provide support as necessary for Nitriles employees at Lima and Green Lake plant sites
  • Incident Management
    • Participate in incident responses involving INEOS Nitriles products and support response plan (vendor – Environ) and crisis management team
    • Participate/Lead in Incident Investigations, Root Cause analysis and ensure actions are identified, communicated broadly and action items are closed out for prevention of future occurrences.
    • Participate as a member of the Crisis Management Team
