Title: Senior Charterer
Hours: 37.5 hours per week

A truly global company, INEOS is one of the largest chemical companies in the world with 173 sites across 32 countries. INEOS Trading & Shipping (ITS) trades almost 12 million tonnes of physical feedstock every year enabling other businesses within INEOS; in particular the four highly integrated and differentiated crackers of INEOS in Europe, to manufacture chemicals and polymers.

We have a growing shipping fleet under our control of 14 vessels, which includes VLECs and the 27,500 cbm Dragon series of ships capable of transporting shale gas from the US to our cracker sites in Scotland and Norway.  The shipping team transports more than 10 million tonnes of products per year for our businesses with around 3,000 movements per year across seaborne and inland routes. 

As a key member of the INEOS Trading & Shipping Team, the Senior Charterer is responsible for ensuring all term or spot charters are procured safely, efficiently and economically for bulk shipping services.

Key Accountabilities:

  • The Senior Charterer has commercial responsibility for term & spot shipping operations on bulk shipping for gas and liquid chemical vessels on behalf of various INEOS businesses. All deals will follow the spot procurement and compliant processes and Delegation of Authority. This role will also lead negotiations on behalf of other INEOS businesses, as required.
  • Utilise technical and practical knowledge of tank conditioning and last cargo requirements and ensure all ships are vetted and port cleared prior to use whilst adhering to all INEOS marine safety requirements.
  • Work closely with the INEOS Marine Assurance Team to ensure all safety or known marine operational problems associated with safety are promptly communicated and resolved.
  • Negotiate and procure shipping agreements to generate the optimum value. Provide in-depth analysis of offers and relevant benchmarking.
  • Ensure all procurement to pay processes are followed. Working with operators, traders, ship brokers and financial operations to ensure smooth operation, including prompt invoice validation and payment of supplier invoice payments.
  • Lead and drive marine projects, as required, including defining scope, understanding safety, industry and financial impact.
  • Resolve any queries or disputes from counterparties, ship owners, operators or traders.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • 10 years bulk shipping commercial experience, particularly in gas or liquid chemical markets.  Technical marine knowledge preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of charterparties, maritime law, maritime insurance, demurrage principles & trading conventions.
  • Relevant Degree or Qualification in logistics or chartering, preferred.
  • Competent IT knowledge & analytical skills.
  • Fluent in English
  • Excellent negotiator with a bias for action with proven track record of initiative and complex problem solving.
  • Proven project management skills, including innovation and drive.
  • Excellent communication (verbal & written) and powerful networking, negotiating & influencing skills.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and pressure, with confidence and courage. With ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Keen eye for detail, numerate and ability to communicate complex situations effectively to management.
