Process Safety Specialist

Main role purpose:

The post holder provides leadership in process safety (design and operation) to set corporate standards and ensure regulatory compliance with all aspects of technical process safety across all manufacturing sites.

Key responsibilities & accountabilities: 

  • Define annual objectives for the manufacturing sites and implement improvement plans to ensure continuous progress of the business in process safety.
  • Act as the focal point to provide assurance that process safety meets minimum standards; implement a process so that unacceptable and intolerable risks can be alerted to the Operations Management Team.
  • Implement specialist process safety assessments, promote best practice, and coach staff to ensure compliance and optimum management of process safety risks.
  • Provide guidance in Process Safety for all projects: (1) review process safety documentation for completeness (2) lead Hazop and SIL studies (3) provide recommendations, and propose alternative cost-effective solutions.
  • As directed by the Business SHE Manager, undertake post-accident investigations, including determining the root cause and specifying measures to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Keep abreast of legislation and best practice in process safety by participating in industry forums.

Key skills & experience: 

  • Degree qualified or equivalent professionally qualified chemical engineer, with at least 10 years experience within process safety and plant design.
  • Minimum of 15 years top-tier Seveso chemical plant experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of Process Safety standards (OSHA, INEOS 20 principles) and of relevant national regulations (Seveso implementation in BE, DE, ES, FR, IT, NO, SE, UK).
  • Working knowledge of the chemical processes used within INEOS Inovyn and of the associated risks (toxic, fire, explosion).
  • Excellent knowledge of the methods for evaluating the probability and severity of potential chemical process safety incidents (toxic releases, fire and explosions).
  • Expert in Process Safety disciplines: SIL, Hazop, inherently safe design, consequence modelling.
  • Able to analyse complex issues to develop logical and rational conclusions and actions.
  • Able to apply highly technical arguments and influence both internal and external organisations.
