The Position: The Process Safety Management (PSM) Engineer oversees and supports the site PSM initiatives and ensures compliance to applicable process safety regulations. He/she oversees the Process Safety Management program, Risk Management Program (RMP), Management of Change (MOC) element, Process and Dust Hazard Analysis (PHA/DHA) systems, Incident Investigation, and Capital Projects Risk Assessments.  The jobholder will drive resolution of PSM issues by interfacing with plant personnel, supporting Process Safety audits, and leading the INEOS 20 Safety and Behavioural Principles initiative.


What you will do: 

  • Preserve high standards of safety, asset care (housekeeping, equipment care), environmental consciousness, and organization.
  • Serve as PSM Authority, providing regulatory compliance guidance for PSM/RMP programs for the Channahon Facility. Advise and assist Managers, Supervisors, Engineers, and Contractor Safety Representatives to ensure that the facility operates within company policies, procedures, and performance standards.
  • Develop process workflow to identify and maintain Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).
  • Monitor regulatory changes, publicly available information, and significant incidents at plants.  Support the workforce in understanding and applying lessons learned.
  • Manage KMS database to track action items from inception to completion.  Provide technical support to the KMS software system and serve as the Administrator for the facility.
  • Facilitate activities necessary to conduct PHAs, including node-by-node analysis and Checklist/What If methodologies.
  • Lead Process Hazard Analysis and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) to meet internal INEOS Group Guidance Notes and external regulatory schedule requirements while providing necessary documentation, completing management reviews and issuing reports within established deadlines. 
  • Lead safety studies for new projects and work with site engineers to ensure effectiveness and consistency of PHA’s and LOPA’s.
  • Lead Management of Change program by participating in the gatekeeping, approval process, and identification/resolution of opportunities for improvement.  Maintain associated procedural and technical documentation. 
  • Provide guidance for Pre Start-Up Safety Reviews (PSSRs).
  • Routinely interact with employees and contractors on Behavioral and Process Safety Principles concerns and issues.  Participate in employee safety committee initiatives. 
  • Support development and implementation of PSM awareness and education programs (i.e., training, toolkits) for employees and contractors.
  • Perform formal and informal audits of PSM elements to ensure compliance with INEOS Safety Principles and other company and regulatory requirements. Serve as local lead for INEOS Process Safety Audits. 


What you will bring: 

  • Level of education & knowledge: 
    • Bachelor’s degree in in Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Science, or related technical degree required.  Chemical Engineering preferred
       
  • Experience in general: 
    • Minimum of 10 years of progressive process safety experience preferred.
       
  • Technical skills: 
    • Demonstrated experience with EPA, OSHA, and DOT regulations including knowledge of regulatory compliance standards, 29 CFR 1910 series and 40 CFR Part 68 with emphasis on Process Safety Elements and Risk Management program elements required.
    • Possess a working knowledge of common chemical industry process safety policies, procedures, guidelines and best practices
    • Additional experience with formal Root Cause Failure Analysis is desired but not required.
       
  • Competencies, Behavioral skills: 
    • Strong interpersonal, verbal, written and communication skills necessary to interface with teams.
    • Ability to work with low levels of supervision, both alone and on teams.
       

Physical demands: 

  • Frequent viewing a computer monitor, stooping/crouching, balancing, climbing, twisting/turning, reaching above shoulder level, simple grasphing/manipulation of both hands, exposure to dust/gas fumes, chemicals/solvents, temperature extremes, high noise levels and electrical sources.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying up to 50lbs, travel, pushing/pulling from a standing/seated position, kneeling, crawling, firm grasping of both hands, operating machinery, wearing occlusive clothing, exposure to allergic agents, enclosed spaces, wet conditions and reduced lighting. 
  • Medical clearance needed to wear a respirator.

The annual base salary for this position typically ranges between $105,768 and $158,652. Additionally, employees may be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus as part of their total compensation package. This salary range is an estimate based on factors such as candidate qualifications, operational needs, and business performance metrics. Actual compensation may vary above or below the stated range, as permitted by applicable laws in Illinois. 
 

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge and skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At INEOS Styrolution, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role. Compensation decisions are carefully made based on the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
