INEOS is a global manufacturer of petrochemicals, speciality chemicals and oil products. Comprising 36 individual businesses, we operate 194 facilities in 29 countries throughout the world. 

With LAO manufacturing facilities in USA, Canada and Belgium, INEOS Oligomers is one of the largest merchant suppliers of Linear Alpha Olefins (LAO), which are used as co-monomers in polyethylene manufacture as well as in surfactants, lubricants, and oil drilling fluids. Our technology has a clear competitive advantage over our competitors. Further developments of the technology are planned to be an integral part of this project.

Our markets are growing worldwide. Through selective investments in new assets and new technology, we intend to capture this growth to develop our business and grow with our customers. As part of this exciting growth strategy, we are investing in a new world scale production facility located in the Middle East. The plant capacity will be 420 KTA and is planned to come on-line in 2029.

Under the direction of the PDM the Process Engineer will execute the development of the process heat and material balance, the Process Flow Diagrams defining the process to be constructed, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID’s) for the detailed process definition, equipment lists and specifications, and design of safety systems for the process.   The Process Engineer will work with the project team and engineering contractors to ensure that the process design and control systems design goals for the plant are met from inception to start up.

The location for FEED and EXECUTE will be done outside of the United States requiring onsite presence in the contractor offices.  After startup, the Process Engineer will join the operating team in Kingdom of Saudia Arabia (KSA).

This position will require frequent international travel (75%) to facilitate in-person involvement throughout the lifecycle of the project.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Accountability 1: Participate and influence engineering process

Most Important Activities:

  • Control philosophy development, design, documentation, and implementation of process systems.
  • Participate in control system engineering activities for a new plant.
  • Conduct reviews of basic and detailed engineering documents to guarantee performance of the plant.
  • Ensure safety is designed into the asset in line with minimum requirements as summarized in the Oligomers Process Safety Handbook.
  • Support hazard analysis of project design including assessing and implementing hazard analysis recommendations.

Accountability 2: Front-end loading organization phase

Most Important Activities:

  • Support the design of integral control systems and process engineering including but not limited to: process flow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment lists and specifications.
  • Support the design of integral process safety systems including but not limited to safety interlocks, safety devices, including specification and schematics.
  • Assist other engineering discipline design efforts such as plot plan design, equipment spacing and arrangement, constructability, piping layout and design, and preliminary mechanical, instrumentation and electrical engineering.
  • Participate in process safety evaluations as per industry standard, including SIL analysis and HAZOP process.
  • Work cooperatively with Project Management to control cost escalation and ensure the design supports business objectives.
  • Review Process Design Deliverables produced by Contractor to ensure quality and drive the design towards a cost and operational optimum
  • Manage Contracts to ensure Process Design Deliverables comply with Project’s Design Guidelines and Philosophies
  • Work with procurement to prepare cost estimates and obtain equipment bids for the project.

Accountability 3: EXECUTE Stage

Most Important Activities:

  • Execute engineering discipline design with minimal change to process design
  • Support Pre-commissioning and Commissioning / start-up planning
  • Participate in construction activity with punch list and field review as required.
  • Prepare process documentation for hand-over to Plant Operations

Accountability 4: Plant Operations

Most Important Activities:

After construction, transition to a Process Engineering Role on site

  • Act as custodian of LAO Process technology for KSA Site
  • Act as the process engineering technical subject matter expert in support of operation through:
  • Support plant modifications and minor betterment
  • Assist in safe and trouble-free commissioning and start-up
  • Support of Organization:
  • during rate test to meet capacity objectives & final product specifications.
  • in the longer term, to meet reliability and utility/raw material utilization (variable costs/sustainability objectives).
  • to meet HSE objectives.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • Bachelors in Chemical Engineering required, advanced degree a plus
  • Minimum 5 years process design and chemical operations experience is required
  • Experience working with engineering contractors and equipment vendors
  • English speaking required, Arabic language skills a plus

Skills/Competencies

Technical Skills

  • Understanding of chemical process control and safety system design
  • Strong computational and data analysis skills
  • Familiarity with process modelling and process simulation software (HTRI, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSIS)
  • Understanding of design principles for common unit operations and hydraulic calculations

  • Strong written and oral communication skills
