Role Synopsis
The Process Control Engineer provides technical support for the design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of process control systems at the Ineos Cooper River site. The role provides guidance on instrumentation and control devices to maintain the plant in safe operating order. This role works closely with optimization engineering, project engineering, and operations to achieve the site’s regulatory, production, and efficiency goals.
Key Accountabilities
- Learning, practicing, and leading the INEOS Aromatics 20 Principles of Process and Behavioral Safety and compliance with INEOS Aromatics Life-Saving rules, SHE Policies and Procedures, Stop Work Authority and Safe Work Guidelines
- Implements and modifies existing control loops and logic on site distributed control system (DCS) and HMI displays.
- Generates process and process control enhancement ideas.
- Develops conceptual design, reviews alternatives, and identifies benefits of control system projects.
- Maintains Alarm Response Manual (Hexagon PAS Plant State Integrity)
- Monitors and reduces DCS alarm floods and alarm “bad actors” working with operations and engineering for alarm setpoint, priority, deadband, and delay validation.
- Works with Global Technology to support Operator Training Simulators (OTS).
- Leads and contributes to proper Management of Change (MOC) reviews and documentation.
- Works with process and reliability engineers and plant operators to continuously enhance the safety, reliability, and effectiveness of plant assets.
- Performs cost/benefit analyses for DCS and control system modifications.
- Updates documentation and provides all necessary training for modifications to DCS controls.
- Provides input for the development of process control design standards and the tools.
- Reads and modifies P&IDs and loop sheets.
- Creates and modifies startup, shutdown, and normal operating procedures for process controls and DCS operator use.
- Participates in unit HAZOP studies.
- Participates in all process safety reviews required for process control modifications.
- Provides a base level of backup support and troubleshooting for issues with Honeywell Experion PKS DCS network and hardware.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements
- Degree required: BS degree in a technical discipline (preferably Chemical or Electrical Engineering)
- Number of Years’ Experience Preferred for Entry: 3+ years in manufacturing
- Certifications Required: None
- Language(s) Needed: Must have excellent communications skills in English
Desirable Criteria / Qualifications
- Understanding of Honeywell Experion PKS distributed control system including design and implementation of control modules, and high-level troubleshooting of system issues.
- Knowledge of analyzers, programmable logic controllers, safety instrumented systems, instrumentation and control valves is a plus.
- Understanding of DCS alarm rationalization and industry standards (eg. ISA-18.2, EEMUA 191)
- Previous chemical plant, refinery or related industry experience (PTA experience is a plus)
- Familiarity with cybersecurity from a user perspective, particularly in an Operation Technology (OT) network.
Physical Demands
- Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens and to adjust focus and to receive detailed information through oral communication, make discriminations in sound, and perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction.
- Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
- Must be physically capable of performing Safety/IH duties in a field environment

- Must be at least 18 years of age; legally authorized to work in the United States; and not require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., TN, H1B status), now or in the future.
- Must be able to fluently speak, write, and read English.
