THE POSITION

In this role you will have an opportunity to improve and sustain process safety and availability for the Texas City Styrene plant by creating, maintaining, and improving the control systems used by unit operations and engineering.  This includes distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), graphical computer interfaces, Safety Instrumented Systems (Triconex), Advanced Process Controls System (DMC3), data historians, alarm management software, computer networks and cyber-security. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

This role has significant impact on the plant's operating performance in 3 key areas.  Below are a few examples of the work you'll be engaged in.

  • Impact Safety & Environmental Performance: 
    • Maintain the operating envelopes and Safety Critical Alarms/Systems
    • Maintain the integrity of the monitoring systems for Safety Critical Alarms/Systems and Operating Envelops., performing weekly audits to ensure compliance.
    • Lead or participate in safety reviews including incident investigations, Process Hazard Analyses, Layers of Protection Analyses, and siting studies

  • Drive Engineering Performance:
    • Continually develop and implement ideas to increase capacity, reduce cost, and prevent (or resolve) problems that impact desired safe operating conditions
    • Maintain and optimize Advanced Process Controls Models to ensure that APC can remain on and controlling unit for cost optimization through various stages of catalyst life cycle.
    • Conduct engineering studies for process optimization including recommendations and reports including the investigation and development of tests to provide optimum process conditions for production are.

  • Control Systems Performance:
    • Ensure safe and reliable operations of the plant DCS and PLC control systems
    • Build or modify input and output points and controllers using the Honeywell DCS. Monitor performance and make tuning adjustments as needed.  Troubleshoot problems.
    • Design, implement, and support advanced control applications.  This is primarily done with the DMC3 advanced controllers but can also include CL programs or other advanced control block configurations on the Honeywell DCS.  
    • Build new points as needed on the PI data-historian.  Modify configuration on existing points to support changes on the unit.  Ensure continuous connectivity and no loss of data.
    • Modify safety shutdown system for new projects.  Design and program new logic in the Triconex PLC.  Update operator screens on the Honeywell.  Performs testing on system to validate that it operates correctly as designed.  Assists I&E technicians with periodic safety checks.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum of a B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related discipline is required
  • At least 10 years of experience in oil/gas/refining/petrochemical setting or manufacturing Process Control engineering
  • Experience with DCS/automation systems and control application engineering
  • Strong understanding of system integration and DCS/SIS architecture
  • Understanding of business drivers and ability to align DCS capabilities to meet needs practically
  • Prior experience participating in Management of Change, LOPA, PHAs and HAZOP’s preferred
  • Knowledge of project management principles and understanding of multiple disciplines and their interfaces

Technical Skills:

  • Must have technical skills and experience in basic and advanced Process Control Application Technology. 
  • Experience with Honeywell DCS, Triconex PLC, Aspentech’s DMC3 advanced controls, and PI data historian is highly desirable.
  • PID control equations and how to tune control loops.
  • Computer programming experience including Honeywell CL programming
  • Basic understanding of communication systems (Ethernet, Modbus, etc.…).
  • Understanding of alarm rationalization and alarm management software.
  • Cyber-security knowledge and basic understanding of security measures needed to secure the DCS system.
  • Broad estimating skills and practical understanding of costs (capital, operating, life cycle) preferred
  • Detailed knowledge of process equipment and experience with process simulation such as Aspen Plus preferred
  • Ability to design, build, troubleshoot and tune base regulatory control loops and automated sequences as well as advanced control applications within the DCS and as separate applications
  • Ability to design, build and modify operator console graphics, displays, Control Strategy, Sequence programming and Interlock within the DCS.

  • Ability to function with high autonomy, interface with all levels within the organization collaboratively, and define and prioritize issues and troubleshoot through engaging appropriate resources

THE LOCATION

This opportunity is located at our styrene monomer plant in Texas City, TX.  Texas City is about 40 miles Southeast of Houston and 10 miles north of Galveston Island.  Please note that relocation assistance is not available for this position.
