The Position: Process Control Engineer -
The Process Controls Engineer is responsible for creating and maintaining the control systems used by Unit Operating Shift Teams and Engineers. These control systems include the distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), graphical computer interfaces, data historians, and associated computer networks. These tools enable reliable control of the process, as well as safe start-ups and shutdowns of the operating units. The Process Controls Engineer implements new projects in coordination with the Engineering and Maintenance departments, is a technical resource in the operations department, and acts as an advisor or mentor to junior engineers.
Accountable for the Asset Engineer roles for Safety Critical Systems (SCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Safety Critical Alarms (SCA).
What you will do:
• Build or modify system input/output points and controllers using the Honeywell DCS. Monitor system performance, identify and implement tuning adjustments. Troubleshoot and resolve problems with input/output points. Update operator graphics and alarms.
• Design, implement, and support advanced control applications. This activity is primarily done with the Pavilion Perfecter advanced controllers but can also include CL programs or other advanced control block configurations on the Honeywell DCS. This software enables automatic process adjustments to optimize the unit and reduce/manage variable cost.
• Build new points as needed on the AspenTech IP.21 data historian and modify configuration on existing points to support changes on the process units. Ensure continuous connectivity and no loss of data.
• Work with Operations Engineers to monitor unit performance and troubleshoot problems. Recommend changes to Advanced Control set points to optimize unit. Review cost structure and look for opportunities to improve cost efficiency through the use of controls. Provide technical support for rate changes, start-ups, and shutdowns, as requested. Provide back- up coverage when operations engineers are unavailable.
• Act as Project Manager for small projects related to the control system. Supply justification and economic analysis to site management for project approvals. Use project management tools and direct projects through the various stages of implementation to reach completion. Provide process control support for capital projects. Design/implement controls as needed to meet project requirements.
• Modify safety shutdown system for new projects – independently or with contractor assistance. Design and program new logic in the Schneider Electric Tricon CX. Update operator screens on the Honeywell DCS. Perform testing on system to validate operation, per Design. Assist I&E technicians with periodic safety checks.
• Collaborate with Operations Engineer to manage the development, maintenance, and use of the Styrene Monomer Technical and Cost Model. This task requires a strong background in data analysis, with the ability to explain complex interactions with numerical models, and contributes to business planning/forecasting.
What you will bring:
• Degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering required
• Professional Engineering (P. Eng.) certification required
• 10 years relevant experience in the Chemical Industry preferred
• Must be technically versed on specific equipment and systems, including:
o Honeywell DCS – Legacy TDC3000 and Experion PKS
o Schneider Electric Tricon CX
o Honeywell Industrial Programmable Controller (IPC)
o Pavilion Advanced Controls
o AspenTech IP.21 Data Historian
o Advanced understanding of PID control equations and how to tune control loops
Physical demands: The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
