The Operations Training Specialist is responsible for hands on operations training on equipment and processes, Life Saving Rules and permitting, troubleshooting and problem solving.  His/her goal is to help the plant meet safety, quality, and manufacturing targets, as well as to support and align with the company objectives.

Accountabilities of the job:

Accountability 1: SHE Excellence

  • Train operators on Emergency Procedures and how to utilize safety equipment and systems to maintain the safety and integrity of the process and equipment.
  • Train operators on how to respond to emergencies such as, but not limited to, loss of power, steam, cooling water, instrument air, fires, and other unusual situations. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that all necessary operational and/or safety training is fully implemented and reinforced, that our employees have the knowledge to work safely in our facilities, and employees know they have the right and duty to stop work if they identify an unsafe condition, process, or practice. 
  • Safety champion and adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while training staff.
  • Review Safety metrics to identify trends and develop training for gap closure.
  • Participate in investigation, cause analysis and corrective action implementation for each significant incident/near miss in the unit and ensure that there is a knowledge share and understanding of key learnings by unit personnel.
  • Executing training as required for PSSR’s and MOC’s.
  • Participating in Unit JSA’s, HAZOP’s, PHA’s, etc.
  • Evaluating and executing MOC’s for changes to the training materials.

Accountability 2: Training for Operations

  • Establishing and executing the training process which includes training plan development, qualification process, refresher training, simulation/tabletop drills and training delivery.
  • Lead the execution and evaluation of the training program for the manufacturing department to ensure the training strategies remain relevant and in support of the site needs.
  • Develop qualification pathways and work with supervisors and managers within the manufacturing Assets to identify most efficient training strategies, identify skill gaps, training opportunities, and deliver/develop training solutions.
  • Provide an audit function in areas such as safety, productivity, procedures, and costs.
  • Monitor operator competency, compliance and training requirements using established metrics.
  • Lead and participate in regular meeting with line managers to discuss team training needs and progress.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating specific training opportunities to stakeholders.
  • Create, maintain and update operations training materials on a specific frequency
  • Assess and mark written material associated with operator knowledge and performance verifications, provide feedback and support where necessary.
  • Conduct weekly progress and competency reviews with trainees.
  • Monitoring integrity of the training, compliance execution and review process through auditing.
  • Complete final assessment of Operators by conducting site-based process area field visits to assess process competency is sufficient, acting as the gatekeeper of knowledge and performance verifications and auditing prior training.
  • Leading integration of training and compliance issues into day-to-day activities of the unit.
  • Implementing corrective action plans to address problems in area of compliance execution.
  • Ensures Training material necessary to Operator job certification process across all Site operating units is maintained up to date.
  • Ensuring trainee records are accurately maintained.
  • Coordinates Operator training classes based on the training plan.
  • Train operators on entering high quality Work Notifications (WN) that don’t require rework.
  • Participate and assist in AsCare audits and unit cleanups.
  • Sharing and adapting best practices across crews to provide a consistent experience for all team members, regardless of crew and/or unit.
  • Participate in effective crew safety meetings, lead as requested by management. 

Accountability 3: Site Training

  • Assisting in the development and execution of plant orientation and onboarding activities.
  • Assists other training specialists with training resources as needed.
  • Supports management in development of annual budget for craft training and jointly responsible for training budget
  • Ensure skills and training matrix is kept up to date and available for review.
  • Ensure training outcomes remain confidential.

Required profile:

Level of Education & Knowledge:

  • 5+ years of Operator experience in chemical manufacturing.
  • 2+ years training experience required.
  • 2+ years Console Operator experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience preferred
  • Process Technology degree preferred.
  • 18 Years of Age with a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must possess or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to first day of employment.
  • Possess a current, valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the United States.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without visa sponsorship (U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident).

Experience & Technical Skills:

  • Previous experience on continuous and batch manufacturing units as this role will be required to train and qualify operators on critical equipment and processes.
  • Knowledgeable and hands on experience with manufacturing equipment such as, but not limited to, reactor, distillation, scrubber, pump, compressor, heat exchanger, boiler, water and waste treatment, piping, DCS and instrumentation system
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, RCRA)
  • Possess skills, knowledge, and training related to implementation of Life Saving Rules.
  • Strong knowledge of chemicals and their safe handling.
  • Strong process troubleshooting/problem solving skills.
  • Strong computer skills (Outlook, Microsoft products, iShare, SAP).
  • Experience with maintenance activities
  • Experience with Emergency Response
  • Systematic Operation – Must understand/support critical elements to Safety and Operation and understand site procedures and practices to support delivery of the Operations Strategy.
