Organizational context and job purpose

The Chocolate Bayou Works site is located in Southeastern Texas about 40 mile South of Houston and consists of two Olefins units that produce approximately 3bn pounds/year of ethylene, 2 Polypropylene units that produce approximately 800m pounds/year of polypropylene, storage and transfer facilities at Stratton Ridge.  The Site also provides knowledge sharing support and functional guidance through relationships with the PE/PP facilities at Battleground and the Hobbs gas processing facility in New Mexico, with the headquarters located in League City, TX.

How the Role Fits In:

The Furnace Maintenance Engineer is jointly responsible for the safe, efficient, reliable and cost effective operation of the Chocolate Bayou Olefins complex.  In this role, this individual is accountable for supporting the design, procurement support, and maintenance of the furnaces by providing technical expertise for them.  The Furnace Maintenance Engineer helps to develop both short and long term maintenance strategies while assisting with tracking furnace performance and reviewing maintenance specific KPI’s.  This individual will work on mechanical integrity issues; RCFA’s related to equipment problems and will support the completion of HAZOP recommendations assigned to the Maintenance Department.    This position will support the unit turnarounds by participating in the work list development and securitization, issuing TAR Job Notes, and providing technical support during TAR execution for all furnace work.

This position will also be assigned responsibility for specific unusual maintenance budget projects as applicable.  This will include developing project scope, design, bid specifications, and budget estimates.  In addition, they will be involved with awarding the bid and providing engineering support with the field execution of the project.  This will include the coordination of safety kick-off meetings, Job Safety Analysis (JSA) reviews, schedule development and coordination of the project with other site resources.  This individual will also assist the Furnace Maintenance Superintendent with monthly budget tracking and furnace maintenance forecast updates.

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

Accountability 1:  SHE Stewardship

  • The position is accountable for understanding and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles.  Additionally, this position has a special responsibility to cascade the understanding of these principles throughout their work groups.
  • Leads by example and ensures work group is in compliance with CBW SHE policies and procedures.
  • Leads the work group’s efforts in promoting and demonstrating safe behaviors through personal and team participation in SHE activities including incident investigations, HAZOP's, audits, observations, housekeeping and in reviewing team and others' safety incidents and near misses.
  • Ensure SHE delivery, compliance, and self-verification processes for departmental maintenance activities.

Accountability 2:Engineering Duties

  • Provide daily engineering support to the Furnace Maintenance Department and necessary recommendations with the purpose of improving the mechanical integrity and reliability of the furnaces.
  • Develop day-to-day repair scopes of work for the furnaces, develop code repair packages as needed, and ensure that the best engineering practices and standards are maintained.
  • Review and assess inspection furnace findings and develop a repair scope of work to address the findings and following through completion the execution of the repair scope.
  • Evaluate furnace maintenance and inspection history to propose solutions and coordinate a plan of action with Maintenance and Operations teams to address areas of need during scheduled furnace outages facilitating and utilizing the Outage Readiness Process.
  • Provide the engineering support needed for Maintenance, Operation and Project Depts. in the Furnace areas; recommend and implement changes in furnaces to optimize and improve reliability and safety of the furnace.
  • Research and share knowledge of the related engineering technologies, standards, lessons learned, and best practices within the company.
  • Possess working knowledge of process flow diagrams, piping & instrument diagrams, mass & heat balances, basic piping system design, material handling methods, functional and installation specifications, as well as process instrumentation & control principles.
  • Be an internal resource to customers such as Project Engineering, Operations, Inspection, and Maintenance.
  • Ensure process safety information is maintained as required in the O&P PS&IM Policy for CBW.
  • Assist with the development of the overall furnace mechanical reliability strategy for CBW.
  • Mentor mechanical engineering employees at CBW. Continue to develop the site mentoring program for the Mechanical Engineering discipline at the site.
  • Act as a site resource in the area of furnace maintenance and provide direction to other furnace responsible groups in the organization.
  • Has a working familiarity with the mechanical design and operation of SMK, SCORE, KTI, and Selas furnace technologies and associated piping and equipment such as steam drums, valves, primary, secondary, and tertiary transfer-line exchangers.
  • Knowledge of furnace tube replacement and/or re-tubes of SMK, Score, KTI, and Selas radiant and convection sections, and other associated components.
  • Knowledge and expertise in the application of mechanical codes and standards, industry standard practices, and recommended practices concerning furnaces.
  • Prioritize and manage furnace specific MOC’s, and associated action items to maintain compliance within the maintenance department.
  • Participate in Area Reliability Team (ART) meetings and help the team manage Top 10 Reliability lists; complete assigned furnace reliability and maintenance top ten list items.
  • Support planning, staffing, and managing effort around labor and other resources under unit Turnaround/Shutdown conditions (Utilizing the Outage Readiness Process).
  • Preparation of plans and schedules for TAR events for furnace maintenance areas.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Olefins planning and scheduling department in order to efficiently develop the maintenance schedule with all necessary operations, maintenance, and project tasks.
  • Work jointly with the Furnace Maintenance Superintendent to efficiently develop and frequently update a minimum 5-year furnace maintenance strategy.
  • Develop company and industry contacts to network issues on codes, standards, and practices regarding furnaces.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering tools, systems, practices commonly used in the petrochemical industry.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to be comfortable and effective communicating with all levels in the organization.
  • Display the ability to prioritize work.
  • Display the ability to delegate tasks with appropriate follow up.  

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required.  Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in an integrated chemical processing plant is required.  Five (5) years’ experience is preferred.
  • Prior furnace engineering experience is a plus and preferred.
  • Previous Six Sigma experience/certification is preferred.
