The Maintenance Training Specialist is responsible for hands on maintenance training and training coordination equipment and processes, Life Saving Rules and permitting, troubleshooting and problem solving.  His/her goal is to help the plant meet safety, quality, and manufacturing targets, as well as to support and align with the company objectives.

Accountabilities of the job:

Accountability 1: SHE Excellence

  • Safety champion and adhere to all safety protocols and procedures while training staff.
  • Train maintenance on how to respond to emergencies such as, but not limited to, loss of power, steam, cooling water, instrument air, fires, and other unusual situations. 
  • Train maintenance on Emergency Procedures and how to utilize safety equipment and systems to maintain the safety and integrity of equipment.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all necessary safety training is fully implemented and reinforced, that our employees have the knowledge to work safely in our facilities, and employees know they have the right and duty to stop work if they identify an unsafe condition, process, or practice. 
  • Review Safety metrics to identify trends and develop training for gap closure.
  • Participate in investigation, cause analysis and corrective action implementation for each significant incident/near miss in the unit and ensure that there is a knowledge share and understanding of key learnings by unit personnel.
  • Evaluating and executing MOC’s for changes to the training materials.

Accountability 2: Training for Maintenance

  • Lead the execution and evaluation of the training program for the maintenance department to ensure the training strategies remain relevant and in support of the site needs.
  • Responsible for all the OJT hands-on training forms in maintenance to ensure they remain relevant with critical training and qualification requirements.
  • Develop qualification pathways and work with supervisors and managers within the maintenance department to identify most efficient training strategies, identify skill gaps, training opportunities, and deliver/develop training solutions.
  • Conduct analyses to guide the creation of new training curricula. Ensure curricula address needs of new and existing maintenance staff.  Monitor, revise, and add content, as needed.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of training programs.  Partner with internal stakeholders and SMEs to determine appropriate modifications or elimination of existing training.
  • Maintain and take ownership of the maintenance training program.
  • Draft and revise documents and procedures, as necessary.
  • Validate trainee knowledge on installation, troubleshooting and repair of plant equipment.
  • Responsible for identifying and communicating specific training opportunities to stakeholders.
  • Provides accurate and timely communication to co-workers and works with other functions to improve individual and system performance. Provides ideas, raises concerns, and promotes an environment in which everyone is treated with respect.
  • Conduct weekly progress and competency reviews with trainees.
  • Participate in effective crew safety meetings, lead as requested by management. 

Accountability 3: Site Training

  • Assist in the development and execution of plant orientation and onboarding activities.
  • Assists other training specialists with training resources as needed.
  • Supports management in development of annual budget for craft training and jointly responsible for training budget
  • Ensure skills and training matrix is kept up to date and available for review.
  • Ensure training outcomes remain confidential.

Required profile:

Level of Education & Knowledge:

  • 5+ years of Maintenace experience as an I&E Journeyman or Millwright or in a maintenance specialist capacity in a chemical manufacturing plant.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, RCRA)
  • 2+ years of leadership experience preferred.
  • 2+ years training experience preferred.
  • 18 Years of Age with a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must possess or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to first day of employment.
  • Possess a current, valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the United States.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without visa sponsorship (U.S. citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident).

Experience & Technical Skills:

  • Previous experience in a manufacturing plant as this role will be required to train and qualify maintenance employees on critical equipment.
  • Knowledgeable and hands on experience with manufacturing equipment such as, but not limited to pump, compressor, heat exchanger, valves, piping and instrumentation systems.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements (i.e., OSHA, EPA, TCEQ, RCRA)
  • Possess skills, knowledge, and training related to implementation of Life Saving rules.
  • Strong knowledge of chemicals and their safe handling.
  • Strong process troubleshooting/problem solving skills.
  • Strong computer skills (Outlook, Microsoft products, iShare, SAP).
  • Experience with maintenance activities
  • Experience with Emergency Response
