Organizational context and job purpose

The Olefins & Polymers USA division of INEOS is one of the largest producers of olefins and polyolefins in North America. From its manufacturing locations at Chocolate Bayou and the Battleground Manufacturing Complex, it is a merchant marketer of butadiene, ethylene, polypropylene and high-density polyethylene with annual revenue of over $4b.

The Chocolate Bayou Site is located in Southeastern Texas about 40 miles South of Houston and consists of two Olefins units that produce approximately 3bn pounds/year of ethylene, 2 Polypropylene units that produce approximately 800m pounds/ year of polypropylene, and the Light Ends storage & transfer facilities at Stratton Ridge.

How the Role Fits In:

The primary role of the IE Maintenance Engineer will be to maintain and to improve the safety and reliability of the electrical distribution equipment and instrumentation throughout the site.  The IE Engineer will be a technical resource to Maintenance Team Leaders, contribute to a safe working environment and be engaged with daily issues, compliance, project support, and the long term reliability strategy.

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

Accountability 1:  SHE Stewardship

  • The position is accountable for understanding and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles.  Additionally, this position has a special responsibility to cascade the understanding of these principles throughout their work groups.
  • Leads by example and ensures work group is in compliance with CBW SHE policies and procedures.
  • Leads the work group’s efforts in promoting and demonstrating safe behaviors through personal and team participation in SHE activities including incident investigations, HAZOP's, audits, observations, housekeeping and in reviewing team and others' safety incidents and near misses.
  • Ensure SHE delivery, compliance and self-verification processes for departmental maintenance activities.

Accountability 2:  Work Duties

  • Acts as designee for Infrastructure Maintenance Superintendent and Technical leads in their absence
  • Assist the site Analyzer and I/E Maintenance Team Leaders as an engineering resource
  • Coordinate directly with I/E Reliability Engineering  on improvement opportunities
  • Lead and /or serve on root cause failure analysis and incident investigation teams
  • Develop detailed work scopes for engineered projects
  • Develop maintenance work procedures and preventive maintenance procedures
  • Demonstrate knowledge of NEC, NESC, NFPA 70B, and NFPA 70E
  • Working knowledge of power system analysis and protective relays
  • Investigate instrument failures and issue recommendations to eliminate further occurrences
  • Participate in Process Safety Management process
  • Provide engineering support for SIS implementation projects, TARs, and capital projects
  • Provide troubleshooting assistance for unusual or persistent Analyzer and I/E problems
  • Apply site I/E engineering technical procedures and national standards
  • Work with operations, engineering, and technicians to identify and prioritize reliability improvement
  • Read instrumentation loop sheets, P&ID drawings, One-line and 3-line drawings
  • Read function block, ladder logic, and responsible for PLC program and narrative changes
  • Size and select instruments and control valves
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Communicate daily with operations and maintenance persons in the field
  • Be available off hours to support significant maintenance events
  • Lead outage readiness exercises and daily huddles during execution
  • Support Maintenance Department Goals and Objectives in line with site scorecard

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of one (1) to five (5) years of maintenance field experience in chemical, refining or industrial manufacturing.  Preferred candidate would possess five (5) years of experience.  
  • Exceptionally strong communication skills, drive, sense of urgency and problem-solving abilities will be critical for the success of this individual and are required.
  • The successful candidate must possess the skills of a change agent and have demonstrated success in implementing engineering processes and procedures.

The preferred candidate would have these skills:

Electrical

  • Experience with SEL software is a plus
  • Ability to troubleshoot motor controls 480 volts through 4160 volts
  • Size conduits, cables for motors, MCCs, feeders, etc.
  • Ability to calculate arc flash values is a plus
  • Work with outside vendors on coordination, load flow, arc flash and other studies related to the plant electrical system

Instrumentation

  • Experience with PLCs
  • Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation loops from field to DCS systems
  • Design and program control and interlock systems
