The 300-acre INEOS Battleground Manufacturing Complex (BMC) was originally built in 1956 and is located on the Houston ship channel east of Houston, Texas. The site is comprised of 7 polyethylene lines; 1 polypropylene line; a 20 MW Cogen facility; and a state-of-the-art polyolefin technical center that supports research and development, technical services and quality assurance. In 2017, a new world-scale bimodal polyethylene unit was brought online to manufacture high-density polyethylene.

Purpose of the job:

The successful candidate who fills this position will work as a member of the BMC Operations Team in La Porte, TX, consisting of engineers, specialists, and hourly technicians who report to Operations Management in PE, PP, and Utilities.

The specific unit assignments will be decided once the recruiting process is complete, in order to adequately balance the levels of process engineering experience among the BMC units (PE, PP, Utilities).

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

Most important activities:

  • Demonstrate safety and environmental leadership:  strive to improve the safety and environmental performance of the unit; participate is site SHE initiatives and programs including Process Safety Management through PHAs, MOCs, incident investigations and operator training.
  • Accountable for understanding and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles.
  • Demonstrate a cross-functional technical understanding of the polyolefin business
  • Provide process engineering expertise.
  • Act as the technical leader for small to mid-size projects.
  • Provide leadership role in developing and improving INEOS O&P USA operations and reliability.
  • Identify areas for improvements and champion ways to create value and reduce costs.
  • Help troubleshoot process issues and support plant needs
  • Lead the design of small capital projects. Ensure their delivery and implementation.
  • Act as the FEL lead for capital projects
  • Ensure acquisition and sharing of best practices within INEOS O&P USA. 
  • Create connectivity (internal and external) to leverage internal knowledge for problems.
  • Mentor less experienced process engineers
  • Track key process and quality measures for unit operations and recommend corrective actions.
  • The ability to work with a cross functional group to successfully resolve operational challenges, develop and implement new technology and/or products into the polyolefin processes using data oriented problem solving tools.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor of Science Degree specializing in chemical engineering preferred, other Technical BS degrees with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience in a polymers manufacturing facility will be considered.

Since the nature of technical support includes troubleshooting unexpected problems or upsets, the person for this job must be able to work long hours that can extend into nights and/or weekends if the need arises.  In addition, some shift work will be expected on an occasional basis for items such as training, troubleshooting, or project commissioning. 

ADA Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity Requirements, and Environmental Conditions

The process engineer must be able to work in a variety of environments that include both fieldwork and deskwork.  Minimum requirements include:

  • Maintaining constant awareness of personal safety and the safety of all other personnel.  This includes knowledge of unit operation, procedures, and rules.
  • Being able to work in a safety sensitive environment that includes large rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals. 
  • The manufacturing facility is located outside in the Houston ship channel area.  As such, the process engineer must be able to withstand both high temperatures and high humidity while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • In addition, the engineer must be comfortable working in a loud or dusty environment that could include exposure to fumes / odors or vibration from surrounding equipment.
  • Being able to ascend and descend a barrel ladder with continuous vertical length of up to 35 feet. 
  • Being able to climb and descend stairs up to a total structure height of 150 feet.
  • Being physically able to wear and navigate through the unit with a respirator if needed.
  • Being able to pick up a 50 lb object such as a fire extinguisher.
  • Being able to work at a desk and operate routine items such as a computer and calculator.
