JOB purpose

The VAT Accountant is responsible for the analysis and preparation of Intrastats and VAT Returns and to ensure these are submitted to strict deadlines on a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly basis on behalf of INEOS O&P Europe and INEOS FPS for 16 legal entities across 11 countries.

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

  • Verify and VAT code purchase invoices over £50k/€75k/$75k on a daily basis.
  • Clear and reconcile VAT general ledger account codes on a monthly basis and investigate any anomalies accordingly.
  • Analyse, prepare and review VAT Returns on a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly basis for 15 VAT Registrations across multiple entities, using the relevant system reports’ and ensuring compliance with “Making Tax Digital” regulations for all UK returns, including consolidating returns from other UK businesses.
  • Where third-party service providers submit returns liaise with and provide relevant spreadsheets, reports and copy invoices to enable them to submit a return to the relevant authorities in specific countries.
  • Prepare VAT cash forecast monthly and send to Cash Forecaster.
  • Prepare payment requests on the Treasury system to ensure VAT returns are paid within the due date.
  • Monthly VAT settlements showing VAT payments due by or refunds due to the various businesses included in a consolidated return and enact settlement via In-house cash accounts.
  • Analyse and prepare Intrastats (a statistical record of goods arrived and dispatched between EU countries) for 9 VAT Registrations on a monthly basis
  • Check duty deferment statements match the payment taken on the 15th of every month by HMRC, liaise with Hydrocarbons Team leader to ensure duty costs are allocated correctly.
  • Reconciliation of Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) statements on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare an EC Sales List which is submitted to relevant EC country’s authorities on a quarterly basis for all countries within the European Union.

qualification, knowledge and skills

  • HNC in relevant subject plus 2 years experience within a financial accounting environment or 5+ years within a financial accounting environment of a large multi-national company.
  • A good understanding of UK VAT rules and regulations.
  • A working knowledge of EEC VAT rules and regulations.
  • Experience of preparation of Intrastat & VAT returns
  • Previous knowledge of SAP would be beneficial.
  • Good understanding of the principles of sound internal control.
  • Pro-active and self motivating attitude.
  • Excellent team player with very good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work to very tight deadlines.
