Organizational context and job purpose

INEOS Nitriles is the world’s largest supplier of Acrylonitrile and Acetonitrile as well as the industry leader in Acrylonitrile process and catalyst technology. The business has three Acrylonitrile production assets (two in US and one in EU) with the capacity to produce over 1 million tons of product. As well as producing Acrylonitrile, the Nitriles business also runs an Ammonia business (1000 ktpa of NH3/HNO3) and a speciality Catalyst business.

INEOS Phenol is the world’s largest supplier of Phenol and Acetone. The business has 3 European production assets and 2 production assets in the US with a capacity of 1.9 million tons of phenol. Later in 2023, the Business will integrate the Singapore assets that it is acquiring from Mitsui Chemicals, which will add 310 thousand tons of Phenol capacity, along with 410 thousand tons of cumene and a capacity of 225 thousand tonnes of bisphenol A. The acquisition will provide INEOS Phenol with a global footprint for the first time.

This role is responsible for development, management and delivery of the commercial project portfolio (reporting to the Business Director) for both INEOS Phenol and INEOS Nitriles, to drive the medium and long term business growth and development strategy of the Businesses, alongside the  strategically important business Sustainability agenda. With a focus on business growth through new investment opportunities including mergers & acquisition opportunities all captured in an up to date 5 to 10 years project plan P&L for the Board of Directors.

This role will lead the business development team in the implementation of business strategy, commercial options, economic analysis and stewardship of large strategic capital projects. The role will develop and implement strategies which enhance the market position and profitability of the businesses ensuring a strategic focus on Sustainability. 

The role will also lead the Global Sustainability strategy for both INEOS Phenol and INEOS Nitriles. Not only ensuring full compliance to Group initiatives, but also that sustainability is factored into any Business Development opportunity, having fully explored all available opportunities for government financial incentives, and is considered a key factor in any business development opportunity and decision making. The function will also develop C3D’s ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) policies according to market trends. 

Accountabilities 

1. Lead Business Development Activities

  • Develop and manage the business development portfolio of projects from concept to execution.
  • Collaborate with wider business teams to understand needs and pro-actively propose development options.
  • Analyse and recommend capital and non-capital projects to support business strategy and P&L plans always ensuring sustainability is taken into consideration.
  • Evaluate grants / subsidies / financing opportunities.
  • Support the Businesses to drive the global Projects portfolio throughout the various stage gates, up to the point of reaching reach Board approval.
  • Maintain and update the Business Projects Plan and medium & long term EBITDA development potential for the Board of Directors.
  • Support New Business, New Build, Capacity expansion, fundamental research development project initiatives. Act as SPA for some of the key projects.

2. Mergers & Acquisitions

  • Lead M&A processes, including due diligence process / data room settlement and analysis / drafting of SLAs etc.
  • Develop contractual environment around M&A projects, consisting of initial Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to potential Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU), Supply & Off-take agreements, License agreement, commercial settlement agreements etc…

3. Sustainability 

  • Lead on the Sustainability strategy for both INEOS Phenol and INEOS Nitriles
  • Understand the Customer requirements and interpret into viable business objectives
  • Liaise with CEN

The post holder will have 3 direct reports. 

Experience and Skills 

Level of education & Experience in general

  • University degree, preferably Technical. MBA or other masters level business degree desirable
  • Relevant experience in business development, sales, supply and trading, commodity and financial markets, and/or risk management
  • 15+ years of petrochemical industry experience

Technical skills

  • Negotiation of contracts, understanding of business and anti-trust laws
  • Knowledge of industry structure (value chains, participants, competitive offerings), the dynamics of customer/supplier relationships, and supply/demand trends along the value chain
  • Knowledge of commodity and financial markets, and trading instruments
  • Knowledge of supply, logistics and exchange agreements
  • Experience in financial analysis
  • Experience in strategy development
  • Experience in projects management

Other

  • Languages - complelete fluency in English with capability to present in this language, and preferably knowledge of other European languages.
  • Up to 40% travel required
