The Position: TheShift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operation of the unit. They should coordinate communication between engineering, management and operations on unit rates, equipment status, and inventory through daily meetings, reports, and unit readings.  They are responsible for the direction of 8 operators including performance management, scheduling, training and development and daily coaching as well as ensuring the shift runs in a safe, environmentally responsible and efficient manner focused on meeting business team objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise operators assigned to unit: Manage operations personnel through shift schedules, overtime call out, absentee reporting (sick leave, vacation, funeral, etc.), discipline, and payroll (verify and enter exception time) following guidelines in the company policy.  Develop and communicate team performance expectations and ensure standards are met or exceeded via feedback, annual reviews and metrics.  Coach and mentor entire operating team, individual team members or others to continuously improve Operations, developing a consistent, high-level of performance at the Bayport plant.  Identify and facilitate conflict resolution.  Proactively identify and resolve Operator Team concerns.
  • Support safety expectations: Foster a safety culture.  Lead by example in applying INEOS' Principles of Process and Behavioral Safety as well as the Life Saving Rules.  Ensure incident reporting, proper permitting and risk assessments, adherence of procudures, etc.
  • Conduct daily inspection of units: Help ensure proper housekeeping,detect unwanted process or mechanical changes, and ensure desired progression of unit maintenance.  A key focus of these inspections will be to ensure tasks are being completed safely and in an environmentally compliant manner.
  • Lead daily status meeting / weekly safety meetings: Use daily status meeting to allow operations to discuss requested process changes and any safety issues they may encounter.  Help maintenance prioritize needed changes to the daily work schedule. Weekly safety meetings allow all unit personnel to discuss safety, operations, maintenance, and engineering issues or concerns.
  • Ensure incident reporting: Support proper reporting of incidents to help instigate proper response.  This will help mitigate any unwanted outcomes and return the unit to a safe state as quickly as possible. 
  • Create or Revise Procedures: for S/U, S/D, Normal Operations, as well as Special Procedures.  Review new procedures or updates to ensure they are correct and complete. 
  • Start up, Shutdown, and TAR Planning and Execution: Knowledge of the unit and process makes the Shift Supervisor a strong candidate to help plan S/U, S/D and TAR in a safe and efficient manner. Determine which jobs and personnel need to be grouped together.  Help coordinate planning and implementation of TAR work. 
  • Create or Revise LOTOs: LOTOs are needed for almost every maintenance job performed. Ensure LOTOs are complete and correct for required maintenance jobs.  Develop these plans as needed. 
  • Training: Focus on training to develop Operator skills and knowledge to meet current and future business needs. 
  • Process Improvement Opportunities:  Seek out process improvement opportunities, including project work and variable cost incentives.  Understand, explain, and drive variable cost improvements with each member of the shift.  Active role in projects may be expected.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

External Candidates

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. as a minimum 
  • 10+ years of plant operations experience (including experience with other companies) that includes significant process troubleshooting
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience with demonstrated leadership required

OR

Internal Candidates

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. as a minimum 
  • 5+ years of plant operations experience that includes significant process troubleshooting
  • Supervisory experience with demonstrated leadership competencies preferred; prior supervisory experience (including with other companies) required if less than 5 years' experience in plant operations within the company

Other requirements (All Candidates):

  • Computer skills – Microsoft Office, PI Process Book, LIMS, etc.
  • Ability to work effectively in complex process operations and understand process flow diagrams and P&IDs.
  • Excellent knowledge of life-critical procedures with ability to provide leadership in the Responsible Care area
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills (e.g., decision making, conflict resolution, people development, performance management)
  • Ability to work 12 hour rotating shifts, including week-ends and holidays.

Physical Requirements:

  • Be able to walk to any location in the plant over varying terrain including ditches, dikes and catwalks
  • Climb 75' stairs and 200' ladders and enter vessels at various heights through 24" manways
  • Must be able to wear, fit and use a respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus, earplugs, goggles, safety glasses, radio and any other safety equipment
  • Ability to use a computer and programs for routine work related to the job
  • Ability to feel vibrations in pumps, vessels, motors, etc.
  • Utilize audio, visual, and olfactory senses to monitor proper operation of plant equipment
