Job Purpose:

The Shift Supervisor provides direct supervision of an operations shift team consisting of multiple areas of the site (petrochemical manufacturing / plastic polymer compounding).

This position ensures that production activities in the assigned areas are scheduled and staffed appropriately to meet production volumes, shipments, and maintenance requirements in a safe and environmentally sound manner.  The Jobholder is also responsible for implementing crisis management procedures, first response activities, emergency management / incident command, and community, state, and federal emergency / environmental notifications.

This a hands-on position that provides oversight and assistance to operations personnel, and will interact with hourly and salaried personnel both in their assigned units and across the site. He/she has signatory authority for all permits for plant work. This position is on a rotating shift schedule to provide continuous operations coverage.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Accountable to the area Manufacturing Superintendent and works closely with him/her in identifying process safety issues, maintenance issues, production constraints, training needs, and aiding in the development of action plans.
  • Must become familiar with unit operations and equipment in order to provide direction on maintenance activity and input on engineering needs.
  • Responsible for the initial qualification and recertification of Team direct reports.
  • Directs the day-to-day operation of assigned area, including but not limited to: safety, productivity, quality, and disciplinary issues.
  • Helps ensures the skill level of all shift team members is maintained through training, testing, and periodic evaluations.
  • Approve time and attendance for direct reports.
  • Approve all maintenance and operational permits that require supervision approval.
  • Assist employees with troubleshooting process problems.
  • Prioritize shift maintenance work based on safety, environmental, and production need.
  • Report all environmental incidents immediately upon occurrence.
  • Assists with LOTO, line break, hot work, confined space entry, and safety work permits.
  • Serve as the primary incident commander during any site emergency. Coordinate emergency activities with outside agencies.
  • Schedule and conduct site emergency drills.
  • To provide continuity of policies and/or in response to business needs; duties, responsibilities, and hours are subject to change. Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Visibly lead, support and promote the 20 Principles for Managing Behavioural Safety and Process Safety and the Lifesaving Rules.
  • Lead crew Asset Care and housekeeping initiatives.
  • Respond to all community complaints. Investigate, document findings, and provide feedback to citizens.

Key Skills, Training and Knowledge Required

  • High School diploma or equivalent and five years prior operational or industrial experience in petrochemicals, refining, or equivalent industrial or management experience.
  • Knowledge of various process control systems and data historians, including DCS.
  • Strong computer skills: SAP, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, including with governmental agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Hazmat technician, fire response, and medical training or ability to obtain these skills is required.
  • Ability to prioritize issues, recognize critical issues, and make quick decisions.
  • Demonstrated / excellent safety and environmental performance.
  • Work and interact effectively as a team member but make and support unpopular decisions.
  • High degree of dependability in terms of attendance and delivering on commitments.
  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • The successful candidate must pass a post offer physical, drug test and background check.

    Physical and Visual Acuity Requirements, and Environmental Conditions

  • Must be able to occasionally sit, stand, walk, ascend and descend stairs, bend, stoop, twist, work around extreme heat or cold, high noise levels over 85 Db, at heights, around dusts/mist/fumes, on wet or damp walking or work surfaces, and work at a moderate or rapid pace.
  • Must be able to infrequently (ascend and descend caged ladders, turn valve/wrench handles, kneel/crouch/crawl, reach above shoulder height, reach at or below shoulder height, work with vibratory tools, do confined space entry, work in cramped quarters, operate vehicles, work with automated machinery, work around allergens (dust, latex, etc.), and around chemicals (AN, Bd, Styrene, MA and others). 
  • Must be able to work outside 50% of the time. Must work with others 50% of the time, use ½ face respirator, full face respirator, PAPR (Powered Air Purified Respirator), SCBA, or Escape Air Pack, wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, long sleeves, hearing protection, fall protection and other PPE as warranted.
  • Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens and to adjust focus and to receive detailed information through oral communication, make discriminations in sound, and perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels, with or without correction. 
  • This position is considered a “safety critical job”, which requires continuous study (SOP’s, Training Manuals, procedural updates), for the employee to be always alert, able to concentrate on their task at hand, and not impaired by medications (prescription, non-prescription, illegal or legal substances including alcohol), or any other mental condition which adversely affects alertness, concentration, or judgment.
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties in a field environment, including the wearing of respiratory protection.
