ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT 

The Olefins & Polymers USA division of INEOS is one of the largest producers of olefins and polyolefins in North America. From its manufacturing locations at Chocolate Bayou and the Battleground Manufacturing Complex, it is a merchant marketer of butadiene, ethylene, polypropylene and high-density polyethylene with annual revenue of over $4b. 

The Chocolate Bayou Site is located in Southeastern Texas about 40 miles South of Houston and consists of two Olefins units that produce approximately 4bn pounds/year of ethylene, 2 Polypropylene units that produce approximately 1.0bn pounds/ year of polypropylene, and the Light Ends storage & transfer facilities at Stratton Ridge.

The Process Technology Group provides leadership and technical resources to improve our existing assets at Chocolate Bayou. They participate in the design, construction, and start-up of new assets for INEOS O&P and also provide fundamental engineering support for commercial and manufacturing optimization tools.  The Process Engineering Group is an essential part of the Process Technology Group by supporting all Process Engineering needs for the team.  A primary responsibility for the Process Engineering Group is project Front End Loading (FEL) deliverables for the Chocolate Bayou Capital portfolio.  The team is also responsible for development of any long term research related programs including leveraging external companies and resources for support to improve the competitive position of the Olefins and Polymers processes.

JOB PURPOSE

This position is a member of the Process Technology Process Engineering Team.The team has Process Engineering responsibilities across all areas of Chocolate Bayou, Olefins, PP, and Utilities.The Process Engineering Team and the Sr. Process Engineer perform scope development and complete front-end engineering deliverables for the Chocolate Bayou Capital portfolio and also for other complicated process problems throughout the Site.The Senior Process Engineer will assist in these responsibilities and provide leadership and mentoring to the other members of the team.This position contributes significantly in the establishment of new procedures within their facility to optimize performance, and supports developing and sharing of best practices across the Site.The individual will also support the Process Engineering needs for compliance PHA/LOPAs as needed and support the resolution of PHA/LOPA action items through engineered solutions and new ideas.The Senior Process Engineer will serve in the Process Engineering Team Leader capacity as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Accountability 1:  SHE Stewardship

  • The position is accountable for understanding and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles.  Additionally, this position has a special responsibility to cascade the understanding of these principles throughout their work group.
  • Leads by example and ensures work group complies with CBW SHE policies and procedures.
  • Leads the work group’s efforts in promoting and demonstrating safe behaviors through personal and team participation in SHE activities including incident investigations, HAZOP's, audits, observations, housekeeping and in reviewing team and others' safety incidents and near misses.
  • Ensure SHE delivery, compliance and self-verification processes for departmental maintenance activities.
  • Support compliance PHA/LOPA Process Engineering needs and resolution of PHA/LOPA action items.
  • Strong knowledge of PSM and requirements to design Safety Instrumented Systems.

Accountability 2: Process Engineering Responsibilities

  • Influence philosophy development, design, documentation, and implementation for the CBW Capital portfolio and plant Process Engineering needs.
  • Participate in the control system and safety system design for assigned projects.
  • Lead front-end engineering teams for assigned projects.  Influence and mentor team members on their assigned projects. 
  • Conduct reviews of basic and detailed engineering documents to ensure accuracy and intent. 
  • Ensure safety is included in design of projects. 
  • Support hazard analysis of project design including assessing and implementing hazard analysis recommendations.
  • Tailor process design to ensure business needs are met.
  • Ensure manufacturing team input is incorporated into process design.
  • Lead and support process modelling responsibilities for the plant and business.

Accountability 3: Analysis

  • Determine the best means of defining and accomplishing defined jobs/projects.
  • Understand many of the 6-sigma GB tools used in Define & Analyze.   
  • Utilize connections/ trends to solve problems and troubleshoot issues. 
  • Challenge the status quo without creating friction.
  • Generate support for changing paradigms to improve business performance.   
  • Use process modelling such as Aspen HYSYS to design and validate project options.

Accountability 4: Project Management

  • Lead 6-sigma GB projects.         
  • Understand the capital process, particularly as it pertains to Front-End-Loading deliverables, and have a working knowledge of project management.
  • Ability to work with a cross-functional team and lead this team when required.
  • Lead projects and look at innovative ways of resolving issues.
  • Responsible for developing project economics, including time value of money.
  • Direct coordination of multiple contractors.

Accountability 5: Team Leadership on mid-size projects

  • Influence others at own and higher levels. 
  • Lead diverse, cross-functional teams for required Capital project teams and Process Engineering problems throughout the Site. 
  • Collaborate with diverse team members.
  • Function as discipline lead on multidiscipline teams. 
  • Mentor new and early-career engineers as well as department interns.

Accountability 6: Problem Solving

  • Use various approaches to solve problems; 
  • Create scopes to address less well-defined problems
  • Ability to solve complex issues by breaking down into smaller quantifiable parts and establishing what needs to be done to resolve the issue. 
  • Develop and share best practices within the broader organization.
  • Generate new ideas / innovation for the work Processes in Process Technology, the Capital process, and for unit operations.   

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Level of Education & Experience

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering
  • In-depth knowledge of engineering discipline and processes necessary to implement work is required.
  • 5+ years of experience with process engineering in a plant setting is required. 10+ years is preferred.
  • Experience in a direct production unit support role is preferred.

Basic Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card. 

Technical skills

  • Able to develop scopes for mid-size projects and solutions for complicated problems.
  • A basic understanding of in-depth budgets and project financial calculations.
  • Working knowledge of the capital deployment process.
  • Understands the most common 6-sigma GB tools used in Define & Analyze.
  • Skills required encompass an in-depth knowledge of the discipline and require in-depth knowledge of equipment, systems, and interactions with other disciplines.
  • In-depth understanding of core discipline skills.
  • Increasing understanding in areas outside core discipline.
  • Working knowledge of business strategy and what operating parameters impact business performance the most.
  • Thoroughly knowledgeable in all areas of facility operation (purchasing, accounting, shipping, etc.) and how they impact each other to complete a mid-size project.
  • Knowledgeable of best practices.
  • Considered a local plant/facility engineering expert in various aspects of their engineering discipline.
  • The incumbent should be adept at the technical aspects of the discipline but begins being adept at the processes required to bring projects to completion and solutions to fruition.
  • Process modelling competencies.
