Quality Laboratory Technician

The Quality Control Lab Technician is responsible for all testing, troubleshooting, and data entry associated with the color, physical properties, and analytical properties of the intermediate and finished products produced in Addyston.

Responsibilities also include raw materials testing, troubleshooting product quality deviations, and supporting plant personnel with non-routine testing and experiments. The Quality Control Lab Technician utilizes statistical process control techniques to evaluate the accuracy and the precision of laboratory test methods, equipment, and manufacturing unit performance. 

This role is an essential component of the ISO 17025 accreditation, as the lab technician has the responsibility and authority to carry out specific tasks as defined in the standard.

This is a salaried non-exempt position and the successful candidate is required to work shiftwork, including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Operate and troubleshoot all equipment and perform testing safely and without negative impact to the environment per laboratory procedures.
  • Participate and demonstrate competence to maintain the lab accreditation.
  • Operate all equipment and perform testing accurately per laboratory procedures.
  • On-time completion of required tests and delivery / input of test results to applicable parties.
  • Visually color match product to customer spec.
  • Completion of statistical process control charting.
  • Interact with plant operations personnel and deliver timely, quality results in a professional manner.
  • Work with plant and contracted maintenance and safely prepare equipment for in / out of service repairs and calibrations.
  • Work with plant operations to maximize quantity of first pass prime materials.

Training, Skills & Knowledge Required

  • High School degree or equivalent (GED) and two years previous laboratory or related experience is required. Some college in a related field is preferred.
  • Rotating shifts, including night and weekend work, is required.
  • Pass company provided Color Tile (colorblind) test.
  • Must pass post offer drug test and fit for duty physical.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, analytical, and color testing.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow Published International Standards.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft products.
  • Good Written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must be able to multitask.
  • Ability to apply logic in troubleshooting equipment and sample issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse groups to gain consensus and a clear path forward.
  • Collaboration skills between multiple individuals and departments.
  • Commitment and delivery of SHE compliance.
  • Makes timely and effective decisions, includes use of good judgment.

Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity and Environmental Factors

  • Frequently standing, walking, working at a moderate pace, and working with others.
  • Occasionally (working around moving machinery, requires repetitive motion, reaching at or below shoulder height, utilization of fine motor dexterity, and working at a rapid pace.
  • Infrequently sitting, ascending or descending stairs, turning handles, and working around noise, with vibratory tools, working around dust/fumes and allergens, and reaching above shoulders.
  • Negligible kneeling/crouching/crawling.
  • Lift and carry 1-10# up to 20 times per shift and 41-50# up to 2 times per shift.
  • Must be able to work shiftwork and wear PPE (such as but not limited to FR clothing, steel toed shoes, hardhat) as required.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer screen and reading.
  • The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
  • This position requires the employee to be always alert, able to concentrate on their task at hand, and not impaired by medications (prescription, non-prescription, illegal or legal substances including alcohol), or any other mental condition which adversely affects alertness, concentration, or judgement. 
  • Must not be colorblind. Being able to visually color match is essential.
