The Position: Product & Applications Development Engineer -Lead the development of market-oriented solutions, taking advantage of Styrolution's unique technology portfolio. Use specialized knowledge to lead both global and America’s regional R&D projects.  Assist the team in customer technical issues and help the manufacturing team in technology related topics. Develop new, improved styrenic materials including ASA, ABS, SAN, their blends and other specialty copolymers using the Regional Development Center together with global resources. The role includes working with internal and external customers to provide customized solutions and act as the primary resource to all product technology related topics.

What you will do:

  1. Develop and plan new, improved styrenic materials including ABS, ASA, SAN, their blends, and other enhanced specialty copolymers using the Regional Development Center together with global resources. Lead formulation/process development for the new products and applications.

  2. Assist the technical service and business teams in technical customer issues and help the manufacturing team in technology related topics (quality, process stabilization, formulations, etc.). Understand and translate customer needs into technical product solutions.

  3. Support capital investment projects. Lead the technical qualification of new raw materials and additives. Responsible for cost saving initiatives to increase the company’s profitability.

  4. Oversee technology transfer of formulation and process know-how to Operations, leading to commercial launch.

  5. Work with sales, marketing and business development functions to assess new product opportunities, trends, end-user processes and business strategies that may be converted into new or enriched innovative product concepts and systems.

  6. Maintain awareness of material technology trends and customer needs to determine emergent needs of the market and individual customers.

  7. Track and contribute to multiple project teams at a time to ensure projects remain focused, correctly prioritized, and directed towards quick commercialization. Plan and prioritize projects to meet schedule and budget constraints.

  8. Utilize specialized knowledge to contribute to global R&D projects in addition to America’s regional projects.

  9. Deliver progress reports and presentations on ongoing development projects.

  10. Participate in cross-functional teams and work effectively to drive change, efficiency, and strong cross-functional relationships.

  11. Participate in industry events including presentations at conferences, article publication, visiting exhibits and shows, etc.

  12. Travel (up to 30%) to production facilities, customers, suppliers, and global functions.

What you will bring:

Level of education & knowledge:

    • Must at a bare minimum have a bachelor’s degree in the field of chemistry, material science, chemical engineering or other similar technical engineering discipline, a Master of Science or a PhD with an emphasis in polymer science is preferred.

    • Knowledge in the field of Styrenics or other related plastics is preferred.

    • Must be able to understand in a short period of time, the relationship between customer needs and product technology solutions.

    • This position will have interaction with the customer and different functions within Styrolution, therefore strong communication skills are a requirement.

Experience in general: 

    • Minimum 2 years industry experience in plastics product and application development or in an R&D type role is preferred.

Technical skills: 

    • Extensive knowledge in formulations; product design; applications

    • A good understanding of injection molding and extrusion of plastics is desired.

Competencies, Behavioral skills:

    • Very good communication skills: ability to work across all levels of the company

    • Presentation skills: ability to represent the group, the business, or the region at internal and external meetins

    • Ability to effectively participate in cross-functional teams and be an important contributor to the company's success

Physical demands:

    • Exposure to dust/gas fumes, chemicals/solvents, temperature extremes, high noise levels, and electrical sources

    • Wearing occlusive clothing

    • Stooping/crouching, balancing, climbing, twisting/turning, reaching above shoulder level, simple grasping/manipulation of both hands

    • Pushing/pulling from a standing/seated position, firm grasping of both hands
