Process Technician

The Chemical Process Technician is responsible for the safe and accurate monitoring, troubleshooting and production output of the INEOS continuous and batch chemical reactor processes and systems utilized in the manufacture of plastic polymers.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Operate and act in accordance with the 20 Principles for Behavioral and Process Safety. 
  • Responsible for personal safety and product quality.
  • Work appropriately with hazardous raw materials, including Acrylonitrile, Styrene, and Butadiene.
  • Operate and monitor continuous and batch kettle processes and all the processes’ axillary systems using a Distributed Control System (DCS). Make adjustments as needed.
  • Operate and monitor process, dryers, hold tanks and product conveys on multiple DCS control systems (adjust as necessary).
  • Monitor reaction process variable trends to make preemptive process changes as needed.
  • Coordinate unit start-ups & shut-downs and perform the proper valving “in” or “out” of various vessel and reactor feed lines.
  • Troubleshoot kettles and unit upsets using Aspen IP.21 Process Browser data. Make changes as needed.
  • Monitor process variable trends to make preemptive process changes as needed.
  • Monitor quality by collecting and running test samples. Plot and interpret statistical process control charts to make adjustments as needed.
  • Communicate with the Lab personnel and internal customers about sample results.
  • During the shift, perform safety walk throughs and record equipment readings on check sheets. Report findings and record in shift log books.
  • Visually inspect and troubleshoot equipment problems and lockout blowers, feeders, pumps, convey lines, etc. for maintenance.
  • Perform minor maintenance on area equipment.
  • Work with the Maintenance department to get equipment in suitable working condition.  This includes preparing equipment to be worked on (lock out / line break, etc.), as well as guiding Maintenance to equipment location and initiating/completing necessary permits.
  • Prepare and handle required premixes and additives for the process.
  • Fill, secure and label Hazardous Waste Drums.
  • Coordinate outside contractors in the area.
  • Interface with management during injuries, spills, etc.
  • Work with Area Engineer to resolve customer complaints.
  • Drain dikes.
  • Properly flush convey lines and overhead hoppers to avoid product cross contamination.
  • Change filters and collection boxes as needed.
  • Drive a Fork Truck when needed.
  • Cross-train and rotate through all established Department positions.
  • Work from both verbal and written instructions of Team Leader, Shift Coach, standard operating procedures, etc.
  • Participate in and complete all required safety training.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in work areas and assist in general cleanup.
  • Perform job tasks and training requirements as outlined in SOP’s.
  • Attendance and a punctual employee presence are essential.
  • Wear steel-toed shoes, hearing protection, fall protection and other PPE when warranted.

Training, Skills & Knowledge Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent education and a minimum of 6 months in a production or maintenance environment.
  • Must take a WorkKeys Skills Test and pass a drug test.
  • Must pass qualification testing and “walk-throughs” within a reasonable period of time.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment with diverse groups.
  • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to thoroughly understand and follow complex work procedures.
  • Good analytical skills. Demonstrated computer skills. Strong math skills.
  • Ability to operate chemical processes and equipment using a Distributed Control System (DCS) and troubleshoot using Aspen IP.21 Process Browser data.
  • Satisfactory completion of unit-defined on-the-job-training certification/qualification, safety training, and all other legally mandated training. 
  • Complete and maintain INEOS Forklift Driving Certification.

Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity and Environmental Factors

  • Must be able to frequentlywalk, ascend and descend stairs (to top of product silos or building rooftops), turn valve/wrench handles, work on wet or damp walking or work surfaces, operate plant vehicles and be exposed to chemicals, such as Butadiene, Acrylonitrile, Styrene, and Maleic Anhydride (may require ½ face respirator, full face respirator, SCBA or PAPR as needed.
  • Must be able to occasionally sit, ascend and descend caged ladders, bend, stoop, twist, kneel / crouch / crawl, reach above shoulder height, reach at or below shoulder height, work in extreme cold or heat, high noise levels over 85 Db, use vibratory tools, work at heights (rooftops and silos), around dusts / mists / fumes and with automated machinery.
  • Must be able to infrequently stand, practice repetitive motion, utilize fine manual dexterity, work in cramped quarters and do confined space entry.
  • This position is considered a “safety critical job”, which requires continuous study (SOP’s, Training Manuals, procedural updates), for the employee to be always alert, able to concentrate on their task at hand, and not impaired by medications (prescription, non-prescription, illegal or legal substances including alcohol), or any other mental condition which adversely affects alertness, concentration, or judgment.
