Organizational Context and Job Purpose

INEOS Nitriles is a global chemicals business with sales volume of 1200 kte and revenue in excess of $2.4 billion.  The Nitriles business has 2 manufacturing operations in the US and 2 in Europe along with offices and headquarters in Rolle, Switzerland and Aurora, Illinois near Chicago. The Nitriles Business primary products include acrylonitrile, hydrogen cyanide, and acetonitrile.  Additionally, Nitriles also has a Plant that produces catalyst for internal use at the Lima Site, globally within Ineos, and for other Acrylonitrile producers. The INEOS Nitriles Plant at Lima is part of an industrial campus which includes a refinery and chemical complex. INEOS share services, utilities, products, and feedstocks with four adjacent manufacturing facilities:  Nutrien (ammonia, urea, nitric acid), Fort Amanda Specialties (chelates), Ashland (1,4-butanediol), and Cenovus Refining (propylene, fuels and refined oil products).

The Process Safety Engineer is part of the Safety, Health, and Environmental team at the Lima site and is responsible for the overall coordination and management of Process Safety at the site. The position will lead and support Process Hazard Analyses (PHA’s), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA’s), Management of Change (MOC) process and Risk Assessments amongst others. The Process Safety Engineer will support driving resolution of PSM issues by interfacing with plant personnel, leading Process Safety audits, and implementation of INEOS 20 Principles.

Major challenge is to help drive the safety culture changes at Lima as we drive towards an injury and incident free workplace. The incumbent needs to challenge status quo thinking and identify and drive improvements in PSM programs and Systems while being a team player and serving all stakeholders on site.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of working across the organization (team members, other employees, and managers) to help an organization advance the effectiveness and efficiency of PSM Systems and reducing risk.

The Total Quality Management System shall be incorporated into all job activities. All job activities should be executed in a safe and efficient manner consistent with the INEOS 20 Principles.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Champions the INEOS 20 Safety Principles and the INEOS Nitriles Culture of Prevention.
  • Acts as the site’s designated Independent Process Safety Technical Authority.
  • Accountable for understanding, promoting, and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles.
  • Adheres to and complies with INEOS Global Life Saving Rules
  • Ensure safe operation and maintenance activities by managing all aspects of the 14 elements of PSM.
  • Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and Layer of Protection Analyses (LOPAs) for processes to meet both internal and external regulatory schedule requirements while providing the necessary documentation, completing management reviews, and issuing reports to meet established deadlines.
  • Assist addressing needs for Safety Instrumented System (SIS) documentation and supporting Safety Integrity Level (SIL) scenario analysis.
  • Support PHA-LOPA action items in the scenario evaluation and challenge reviews to ensure alignment with INEOS practices. Drive action items to timely completion and assist with the development of solid technical solutions.
  • Work with Lima’s Leadership Team to establish site PSM Objectives
  • Facilitate Process Safety Committee meetings
  • Lead Management of Change program by participating in the gatekeeping, approval process and identification/resolution of opportunities for improvement.
  • Support and provide oversight for Pre-Start Up Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Develop and implement strategy for managing Process Safety Information (PSI).
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for each element of PSM covering both system health and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop reports for site Leadership and site teams regarding compliance status and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with PSM Element Owners to develop goals and improvement plans for individual elements.
  • Develop and implement self-assurance activities at the site, including training, to maintain ongoing compliance and to identify trends.
  • Conduct routine assessments to ensure compliance with Facility Siting standards.
  • Maintain and update site’s Risk Management Plan (RMP)
  • Plan and execute periodic compliance audits to ensure compliance with legal requirements and INEOS standards
  • Assess potential compliance risks and improvement opportunities then develop and execute action plans with site teams to close gaps
  • Assess site policies and procedures to ensure that appropriate SHE risks and compliance issues are adequately addressed then develop and execute action plans with site teams to close gap
  • Lead and support SHE and PSM incident investigations.
  • Participate in business planning processes, such as capital planning, so that current and future regulatory demands are included
  • Network with other INEOS sites to share best practices, enhance network operation, and determine ways to implement value-added ideas.
  • Perform other work-related tasks as required.
  • Participate in audits and interviews including 20 Principals, OSHA, etc.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical field required
  • 5+ years of PSM related experience required and plant work experience
  • Experience in Process Safety Management programs/protocols and familiarity with the 14 elements of PSM.
  • Experience in the petrochemical industry is preferred.
  • Highly proficient in Office 365 Collaboration Tools, and similar applications and databases.
  • High knowledge level of chemical industry safety policies and procedures, manufacturing processes, products, and raw materials
  • In compliance with INEOS COVID protocols, you must be fully vaccinated (2 week past your last dose of COVID vaccine) prior to your start date.

Skills/Competencies

  • Demonstrates strong commitment to SHE excellence and a passion for Process Safety.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Demonstrated competency in communicating with all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work as a team member to evaluate complex tasks and/or incidents and develop lessons learned and recommended action items for prevention of reoccurrence
  • Previous experience managing projects or programs in chemical manufacturing
  • Technical & Functional Skills, including a strong SHE regulatory background
  • Good interpersonal skills required
  • Interacts well with all levels of the organization

Expected Salary Range:

$110,000 - $125,000 based on skills and experience
