Organizational Context and Job Purpose

The Olefins & Polymers USA division of INEOS is one of the largest producers of olefins and polyolefins in North America. From its manufacturing locations at Chocolate Bayou (Alvin, TX) and the Battleground Manufacturing Complex (La Porte, TX), it is a merchant marketer of butadiene, ethylene, polypropylene and high-density polyethylene with annual revenue of over $4b. The Chocolate Bayou Site is located in Southeastern Texas about 40 miles South of Houston and consists of two Olefins units that produce approximately 4bn pounds/year of ethylene, 2 Polypropylene units that produce approximately 1bn pounds/ year of polypropylene, and the Light Ends storage & transfer facilities at Stratton Ridge. The Chocolate Bayou site has an immediate opening for a highly-motivated and skilled Process Control Engineer.  This position will provide technical leadership in pursuit of INEOS and site goals by working to support the Olefins C4 operations group and resource team at Chocolate Bayou.

How the Role Fits In

This position is designed for an experienced process control engineer with the focus on day-to-day engineering support and short-term projects. This position will provide technical leadership in pursuit of INEOS and site goals primarily and will support our Butadiene Extraction Units (BEU), Primary and Secondary Hydrotreating Area (GHT & SSHT), steam generation systems at the CBW Olefins Complex and the Utilities-Infrastructure facilities located in Alvin, TX. 

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The position is accountable for understanding and putting into practice the INEOS 20 Principles.  Additionally, this position has a special responsibility to cascade the understanding of these principles throughout their work group. The process control engineer for the C4’s-Utilities area will be responsible to support day-to-day operation of the Distributed Control System (DCS) to optimize and enable safe operation of the assets. In this responsibility, the process control engineer will interface with multidiscipline team in order to support advanced control applications and technologies at the C4’s-Utilities area. 

  • Provide day-to-day process control support; which includes preparation and support for unit shutdowns, turnarounds, and start-ups

  • Provide leadership role in developing and improving process control applications and optimization technology.

  • Provide guidance for prioritization of DCS projects.

  • Support the definition, development and configuration of process control strategy for projects in the C4’s-Utilities area.

  • Ensure acquisition and sharing of process control best practices among operating areas in CBW.

  • Participate in process control networks.

  • Participate in HAZOPs and LOPA studies as needed.

  • Provide process control support for the MOC process, including leading appropriate MOCs

  • Lead process control strategy to maintain the Process Safety, SHE Compliance, Alarm Management, and Quality systems for the assets.

  • Participate in site-wide coverage of DCS issues as necessary

  • Identify and champion ways to create value.

    • Assess emerging technologies of interest, both within and beyond area of specialization

    • Provide analysis of industry trends and vendor capabilities

    • Assess emerging trends and their potential value to the C4’s- Utilities area.

    • Identify gaps and challenges to achieving reduced operating cost, and overall business optimization.

Education and Experience

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 5 years' experience in process controls required.  The ideal candidate will have experience in the application of Honeywell DCS control technology, will have experience in Olefins, petrochemicals manufacturing processes or similar processes, and will have experience with other multivariable control technologies.

More generally, viable candidates will have a technical degree, will have some specialization in advanced process control, and will have at least one (1) year experience supporting unit operations in the field of olefins, distillation, petrochemicals processing, or similar process industries.
