Operations Trainer

Job Purpose

Responsible for management and delivery of the Utilities Asset Training Program and the formal competency assessment processes associated with the Technician population including Apprentice SVQ studies and assessments.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Manage, coordinate and implement local Training Plan to assess and confirm Operating and COW Team competencies meet GMP02 and 03-A-002 requirements.
  • Work with Plant Manager to deliver the training requirements for NEP technicians.
  • Manage new start employees and deliver initial training as deemed necessary before being released onto team.
  • Monitor Technician competency compliance and training requirements using Competency Matrices.
  • Lead and participate in regular meeting program with Technician Line Managers to discuss team training needs and progress.
  • Ownership of Asset Training documents including Plant Overviews and Schematic Plant Drawings including updates using Visio and Alfresco Database.
  • Compile statistical reports for management associated with competency assurance and compliance.
  • Perform site based training to support Technician Training Plan and augment shift “Buddy” training.
  • Assess and mark written material associated with Technician Checkouts, provide feedback and support to trainees when necessary.
  • Complete final assessment of Operating Technicians by conducting site based process area field visits to assess process competency is sufficient to enable the trainee to take over the position.
  • Locally manage Safetyhub and TCS systems including generation of reports to monitor compliance and assigning relevant training courses / documentation.
  • RAP Administration including area management and Icon Authority status.
  • Participate in the Plant Modification process including documentation and drawing updates.
  • Perform duties associated with the Utilities Operations Engineer position during periods of high activity and when necessary.
  • Manage area Training Budget and arrange area specific specialist courses when necessary.
  • Provide training support to Discipline Engineering staff based in HQ including course selection and bookings. 
  • Perform duties associated with Incident Investigations, Traction Reports and actions, Task Based Risk Assessments and other HSE related requests for technical assistance.
  • Actively participate in recruitment programs including interviewing for job roles, new starts and apprentices.
  • Focal point for training as the NEP is built, commissioned and ongoing future operations.
  • Plan and manage annual Process Safety Awayday.

Qualifications, knowledge and Skills

Education / Experience

  • General education attainment equivalent to HND level or relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in the petrochemical processing industry with a high level of operating knowledge of the area.
  • Held shift supervisory and / or senior panel technician role/ or significant experience covering several jobs in the areas.
  • Formally qualified to allow assessment of competence.

Skills / Competences

  • Advanced people skills with proven ability to drive change and performance improvement in a large and diverse population.
  • Detailed knowledge of operating organisation roles and responsibilities and resultant work activities, policies and procedures.
  • Expert knowledge in fundamental processes of plant operations.
  • Proven ability to translate knowledge of underlying principles of process operating activities and procedures across a wide variety of technologies.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of Utilities interface with site.
  • Experienced in COW systems including RAP system and use.
  • Working knowledge of necessary learning management system and processes.
  • Good IT skills using Excel, Word, PI, Access, Visio and Powerpoint.
  • Good written and communication skills to be utilised at all levels of organisation.
  • Able to deliver training to groups in a classroom environment.
