Organizational context and job purpose

INEOS Nitriles is a global chemicals business with sales volume of 1200 kte and revenue in excess of $2.4 billion.  The Nitriles business has 2 manufacturing operations in the US and 2 in Europe along with offices and headquarters in Rolle, Switzerland and Aurora, Illinois near Chicago. The primary products of the Nitriles Business include acrylonitrile, hydrogen cyanide, and acetonitrile. Additionally, Nitriles has a Plant in Lima that produces Catalyst for internal use at the Lima Site, globally within Ineos, and for other Acrylonitrile producers. The INEOS Nitriles Plant at Lima is part of an industrial campus which includes a refinery and chemical complex. INEOS share services, utilities, products, and feedstocks with four adjacent manufacturing facilities:  Nutrien (ammonia, urea, nitric acid), Fort Amanda Specialties (chelates), Ashland (1,4-butanediol), and Cenovus Refining (propylene, fuels and refined oil products).

This position leads and manages the Nitriles and Catalyst operations at the Lima Site providing overall leadership for the safe, reliable, legally compliant, environmentally sound and profitable manufacture of products according to the strategy of business management. A key accountability is the continuous improvement of all elements of site performance. Lima is a unionized site producing acrylonitrile, acetonitrile, hydrogen cyanide and catalyst.

Advancing our Safety Culture, driving Operational Discipline, and elevating Technical Standards are key concerns. This position requires strong leadership and communication skills to enable diverse groups in achieving common manufacturing goals.

Safety and Environmental regulations as well as quality initiatives must be managed and compliance achieved.

Maintenance of safe, reliable, and efficient operations as well as cost control and budgeting are key areas of responsibility.

This position is the Nitriles and Catalyst asset manager and is responsible for the direction, coordination, and implementation of all phases of the labor agreement. This position is accountable to both the site director and the business team for plant performance, budget compliance and capital expenditure.

This position is a critical member of the Incident Management Team to address site emergencies.

All job activities must be executed in a safe and efficient manner consistent with the INEOS 20 Principles. The Plant is certified in ISO9001:2015 and the Total Quality Management System shall be incorporated into all job activities.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

SHE Excellence

  • Champions INEOS Nitriles Culture of Prevention through a high level of commitment to safety.
  • Advances the site’s safety culture to progress towards “interdependency” on the Bradley Curve.
  • Drives Operational Discipline to ensure that safe operations are maintained and that operations comply with applicable SHE regulations.
  • Champion for INEOS 20 Principles of Process and Behavioral Safety. Participates in audits at other sites.
    • Ensures employees and systems are prepared to respond to site emergencies.
    • Responsible for overall asset integrity.  Ensures assets are operated within their designated parameters.
    • Ensures robust safe work systems are in place and hazard assessments are performed (both process and behavioral).
  • Ensures compliance to environmental permits and legal regulations.
  • Ensures compliance to PSM program, with particular focus on PSSR, Incident Investigation, Operating Procedures, and Training elements.

Fixed Costs, Variable Costs and CapEx

  • Develops challenging fixed and variable cost budgets.  Tracks performance and develops action plan to achieve targets.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve and delivers improvement on variable cost efficiencies.
  • Actively participates in development of short-and long-range capital investment plans to meet business objectives.

Reliability

  • Achieves reliability and OEE goals for the site.
  • Uses data to develop and execute reliability improvement plan for the site.
  • Works with maintenance, inspection, and mechanical reliability programs for ongoing maintenance and turnarounds to ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver on quality, budgeted production volumes.

Long-term Competitiveness of the Site

  • Actively participates in development of the site’s 5-Year Vision and Strategy. Challenges the status quo and sets stretch goals for self and team.
  • Collaborates with Commercial and Process, Technical & Engineering groups to develop new site opportunities.

Operations Manager Specific Duties

  • Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and decision making to ensure employees understand company goals and have the knowledge, skills, abilities, and resources needed to accomplish them.
  • Participates in evaluation and development of organizational redesign and planning.
  • Manage personnel including performance, compensation, succession planning and discipline.
  • Ensure compliance with HR policies and applicable state/federal laws.
  • Administers and negotiates the labor agreement with hourly work force. Participates in monthly labor meetings and manages grievances. 
  • Sets priorities for maintenance and engineering in support of daily operations. Coordinates with Commercial, Procurement, Technology and Logistics teams to meet strategic objectives within planned timetables. 
  • Coordinates with Procurement to obtain raw materials for production.
  • Manages production and product inventory to supply customers. Communicates and leads resolution of deviations to production plans.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • BS Engineering, preferably ChemE
  • 10+ years’ manufacturing experience in high hazard, PSM/RMP covered processes
  • 5 years Nitriles experience (preferred)
  • 5 years’ experience supervising exempt personnel
