Organizational context and job purpose

INEOS Nitriles is a global chemicals business with sales volume of 1200 kte and revenue in excess of $3 billion.  The Nitriles business has 2 manufacturing operations in the US and 1 in Europe along with offices and headquarters in Rolle, Switzerland and Aurora, Illinois near Chicago. The Nitriles Business primary products include acrylonitrile, hydrogen cyanide, and acetonitrile.  Additionally, Nitriles also has a manufacturing operation that produces catalyst for internal use at the Lima Site, globally within Ineos, and for other Acrylonitrile producers. The INEOS Nitriles Plant at Lima is part of an industrial campus which includes a refinery and chemical complex. INEOS share services, utilities, products, and feedstocks with four adjacent manufacturing facilities:  Nutrien (ammonia, urea, nitric acid), Fort Amanda Specialties (chelates), Ashland (1,4-butanediol), and Cenovus Refining (propylene, fuels, and refined oil products).

This position is responsible for understanding the manufacturing process to ensure all products meet manufacturing goals and quality standards in a safe and environmentally sound manner.  The incumbent will work closely with the Process Assistants and Manufacturing Manager in identifying process safety issues, maintenance issues, production constraints, and training needs as well as developing action plans to correct the findings and directing the implementation of these plans to the Shift Teams. The incumbent is expected to become familiar with the Acrylo unit operations and equipment in order to provide direction to both maintenance daily activity and input to engineering projects.  The Process Supervisor is responsible for directing the day-to-day operation of each crew, including safety, productivity, quality, and disciplinary issues.  Is also responsible for ensuring that the skill level of all shift personnel/teams is maintained through training, testing and periodic evaluations.  Actively participates in the MOC processes.  The process supervisor is a “hands on” position that will provide assistance to operations personnel as required and will interact with hourly and salaried personnel both on the unit and across the Lima site.  Has signatory authority for all permits to work on the plant.  Is the site representative on off shifts responsible for initiating crisis management procedures, first response activities, emergency management, the INEOS internal call out procedures, and direct warning to the community as well as federal, state, and local agencies (if ERC/Env group cannot be reached). This position will be on a rotating shift schedule to provide continuous coverage on the unit.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

SHE

  • Understands, follows, and promotes the Ineos 20 Principles, Life Savings rules and overall Culture of Prevention
  • Leads the safe operation of the crew
  • Promptly reports and addresses all SHE issues
  • Submit shutdown notifications to environmental
  • Assumes the lead in initial phase of emergency response and provides administrative assistance as required
  • Signs off on special permits
  • Assists with permitting (LOTO, master work, hot work, confined space entry, lifting, radiation etc.)
  • Provides leadership and direction in the housekeeping of the unit.
  • Ensures the completion of unit safety inspections as required

Leadership / Communications

  • Effectively communicates with subordinates, peers and superiors to ensure that information is exchanged at all levels.
  • Responsible for employee development, training, coaching, performance evaluations, setting clear expectations, conflict resolution and discipline with all shift employees. 
  • Must ensure satisfactory training of new hires and existing employees by adhering to internal training guidelines, providing resource materials, encouragement, peer interaction, oversight, hands on demonstration, testing and follow up in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Responsible for conducting effective daily and start up meetings by selecting OSHA mandated or relevant topics and utilizing appropriate resources, materials and employee engagement.

Quality

  • Addresses non-conformances on the unit
  • Oversees quality assurance issues
  • Responsible for process adjustments to meet quality requirements

Production

  • Interprets operating guidelines and is responsible for the execution of the production plan and its objectives.
  • Assists in operations as needed
  • Assures that daily production data is accurately recorded and shift recaps are completed thoroughly and accurately
  • Maximizes the productivity of all crew members
  • Participates in Nitriles Operations meetings
  • Participates in production improvement efforts
  • Assists in managing inventories and shipments

Maintenance

  • Recognize asset integrity concerns and issues that pose safety risks, enter work orders and ensure completion.
  • Responsible for managing the operations group in safe and efficient equipment preparation
  • Responsible for initiating and directing maintenance call-outs.
  • Assists in setting maintenance priorities
  • Enters work requests into SAP

Human Resources

  • Responsible for the administration of disciplinary action as required
  • Tracks attendance and manages the vacation schedule of the crew members
  • Responsible for the efficient manning of the crews

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • HS diploma, 10 years’ operating experience or equivalent background.

OR

  • BS in Engineering or equivalent technical degree with 5 years’ experience in a chemical plant or refinery.

Skills/Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to coach and develop teams and individuals through effective performance management.
  • Requires a high degree of initiative and ingenuity to work with production, contractors, engineering, maintenance craft persons and other site functions.
  • Must have the capability to set priorities, make decisions while taking ownership and responsibility to follow through in order for the facility to meet its requirements for a 24/7 operation.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • SAP experience preferred
