Organizational Context:
The O&P USA business includes the product lines Ethylene, Propylene, Butadiene, Polypropylene and High Density Polyethylene. Manufacturing sites include Chocolate Bayou Works (Alvin, TX), Battleground Manufacturing Complex (La Porte, TX), and Carson, (Carson, CA), with a division office in League City, TX.
Purpose of the job:
The successful candidate who fills this position will join the team as an entry-level Lab Technician and will be expected to train and qualify as a Laboratory Technician 1 for the Carson, CA site lab. This position works days and nights on a rotating 12-hour schedule to include working holidays and providing coverage on overtime shifts as needed. The role requires deep knowledge of procedures, selection and interpretation of data, a thorough understanding of department and site policies, and identifies, defines and resolves problems within scope of responsibility.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
The Lab Technician is responsible for all aspects of the Technical Center operation, including:
- Performing routine QC, quality monitoring and special tests including special sample requests
- Recording and maintaining accurate data in LIMS and lab book
- Communicating accurate observations made during analysis of samples so as to assist in resolving internal non-conformances
- Interacting with production team to troubleshoot production problems
- Assisting in developing new test procedures
- Performing routine maintenance on analytical and process equipment as required for normal lab operation
- Maintaining water quality in closed loop chiller system
- Ensuring all necessary lab supplies are available for QC testing and normal lab operation
- Ensuring all necessary forms are available for lab use, i.e. lab book, log sheet, weekly checklist, etc
- Ordering lab supplies and entering SAP requisitions as needed
- Receiving deliveries and storing supplies in proper location
- Generating electronic work requests for required maintenance items
- Performing general housekeeping, i.e. keeping the Tech Center environment and equipment clean and organized
- Maintaining sample retention area in Technical Center and Warehouse
- Verifying and approving all raw material COA’s with raw material specification
- Applying statistical process controls to monitor equipment performance
- Actively participating in safety meetings & safety training
- Maintaining required job recertification training
- Computer tasks up to 2 hours per day, i.e., email, training
- Reviewing policies, procedures, POD’s and RMS’s annually
Skills & Knowledge Required
Education/Experience
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate
- 2 years lab experience in a chemical plant preferred
- Applicants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19
- Basic knowledge and proficiency in navigation and use of Windows operating system, internet, email and basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is a plus
- Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work a 12-hour rotating shift (nights and weekends) and to cover overtime
- Must become fully qualified in lab operation
Physical Requirements
