Organizational context and job purpose

The Nitriles Laboratory Manager is responsible for the safe operation of the Nitriles Laboratory and the Quality Management system.  This individual works closely with the lab technicians and Operations personnel to provide analytical and quality control services and assure that these work activities are completed in the most efficient, appropriate and safe manner.  This position leads the total quality management system and ensures that it is incorporated into all activities for the site and the laboratory. This individual pursues customer complaints, process problems, or new products by providing direction to laboratory personnel or conducting the testing themselves. 

The incumbent should be familiar and able to troubleshoot the following equipment: gas chromatographs, UV/visible spectrophotometers, pH meters, water analyzers, automatic titrators, XRF equipment and other general lab equipment.

The Total Quality Management System shall be incorporated into all job activities.  All job activities should be executed in a safe and efficient manner consistent with the INEOS 20 Principles.

In compliance with INEOS COVID protocols, candidate must be fully vaccinated (2 weeks past last dose of COVID vaccine) prior to start date.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Visibly supports and promotes the INEOS 20 Principles and the Culture of Prevention.
  • Assure that all activities shall be performed in accordance with established company, local, state, federal, and health, safety, and environmental regulations and procedures.  Assure all work is conducted in a safe manner and provides input on continuous safety improvements.
  • Serves in the Quality Coordinator role for the total quality management/ISO system for the site.  Leads site efforts to continuously improve site quality.  Coordinates internal and external ISO audits and participates in customer specific audits.
  • Maintain continuous product quality control within area through continuous review of test results.  Assures adherence to internal controls and customer specifications.
  • Manages the lab technicians’ activities including scheduling, prioritization of work, calibration schedules and ensures other day to day work load is controlled.
  • Drives develops continuous improvement around lab processes, methods, techniques and equipment.
  • Works with laboratory team to maintain and provide laboratory information for end users.  Works with the operations, distribution, and marketing groups to meet customer testing and reporting requirements.
  • Maintains records and tracking progress of required calibrations.   Provides oversight for calibration standard work.
  • Organizes and communicates product quality control data for distribution to customers.  Key customer contact with regard to customer auditing of the total quality management/ISO system.
  • Receives assignments from the Technical Manager for specific critical laboratory areas and completes all associated records and reports in these areas.
  • Maintains surveillance over equipment, supplies, and replacement or acquisition needs for the final testing labs and in-process testing labs.
  • Consult with engineering, operations, R&D, and necessary outside groups in problem analysis and solution.
  • Communicate with Sales Personnel of both businesses.
  • Expedite special and/or rush test requests.
  • Handle product and sample shipments to corporate lab or customers.
  • Lead daily start-up meetings.   
  • Ensure all Safety Checks in the lab are completed monthly.  Conduct annual verification of all lab hoods on site.
  • Update lab procedures, distributes and conducts training on new procedures, keeps procedure binders up to date as they are issued.
  • Lead the in plant portion of ISO audits. Coordinate and conduct training for lab technicians. 

Nitriles Related Responsibilities:

  • Provide documentation of all waste water daily sheets to environmental team.
  • Daily communication with operations personnel on tank rundown and final results.
  • Assures quality recovery run data.  Coordinates wet test meter calibration (twice per year), provides new acid standard quarterly, tracks recovery run data and testing variables.
  • Monitor in-process testing results and provides training as needed to Operators.
  • Direct lab technicians in maintaining all test equipment and performing maintenance themselves.

Catalyst Related Responsibilities:

  • Maintain XRF equipment calibration and standardization on all catalyst grades
  • Provide troubleshooting expertise for analytical issues with the Naperville lab or outside labs
  • Daily communication with operations personnel on Catalyst Lot Finals.  Supply daily, monthly, and quarterly reporting to Operations on QC data.
  • Communication with distribution on upcoming shipments
  • Shipment of catalyst lots to Naperville.
  • Develop COA's for catalyst lots and issue to the Catalyst group
  • Conduct round robin testing where required with Naperville or outside labs.

HR Related Responsibilities:

  • Executes the requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Schedules appropriate levels of manpower
  • Maintains attendance records, payroll approvals, and vacation and overtime scheduling
  • Administration of discipline

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of five years’ experience, preferably in a plant setting

Skills/Competencies

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel both internally and externally.
  • Strong organizational skills necessary.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Managerial experience in a union environment.
