The Position: Global Technology Manager Process Modeling  -

Purpose of the Global Technology Manager Process Modelling role is to develop and support engineering activities of project teams and Global Technology group with process simulations, calculations and dynamic and steady state process modelling. Lead to identify options for sites for costs reductions, debottleneck options and improvement in process control. Support Global Technology, RDC and R&D on options to implement new formulations and reduce risks of scale up from lab to plant by performing process simulations and process modelling.

The Technology Manager is expected to approach all aspects of the role with our INEOS 20 Safety Principles and our IGGNs as the foundation of their work.

The Global Technology Manager Process Modelling has no direct reports. As product development is organized in regional development lab and with global R&D, the job requires productive working relationships with cultural awareness and leading by technical authority, to ensure objectives are met. The job holder will lead, guide and align to overcome ambiguity, challenge and push back.

Translation of project requirements into an engineering package is technically complex and requires rigour, diligence and accuracy in the Global Technology role. Where plants are scaled up the existing proven designs can no longer be copied and engineering skills with process simulations, calculations and dynamic and steady state process modelling becomes important. The role requires to work on complex technical information, consider alternative options in an early stage of a project and evaluate and decide on selected options in time for a next stage of a project. Technical information from simulations/ calculations/ modelling needs to be translated in meaningful and manageable information for decision making by different stake holders.

The job holder should act at or grow to a level that he/she is recognized across the company as the technical expert on Process Modelling. He should develop in his role and become an expert on PS and ABS polymer technology be recognized as discussion partner for sites, Global R&D and project teams on polymer projects.

Requirements:

Experience in general:

  • > 5 years of experience in chemical industry in project or process engineering roles.
  • Recognized as a process modelling expert from University or industry experience.

Level of education and knowledge:

  • M.Sc. degree or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering .
  • Applied knowledge in polymer chemistry, thermodynamics and mathematics.

Technical skills:

  • In-depth knowledge and experience with process modelling tools (AspenPlus, Matlab, gProms or Python).
  • Experience with process control, heat and mass transfer, rheology, mixing and polymerization kinetics.
  • Experience with unit operations distillation and devolatilisation.
  • Experience in process engineering in polymerisation processes.
  • Detailed knowledge of polymer technology: kinetics (co)polymerisation.

Responsibilities:

  • Understands and assures the INEOS Group Guidance Notes (IGGNs),  INEOS 20 Principles of Behavioral and Process Safety are followed. Communicates and champions the IGGNs and INEOS 20 Principles to empower and enable others. Is an ambassador for Asset Care and preserves high standards of housekeeping and organization. our as the foundation of their work.
  • Develop and sustain Process Safety agenda of the company. Develop process models on run-away kinetics, sizing of PSV/ RD and reactor relief and validate with previous work of process safety experts from different heritage. Provide expert advice on process safety matters to sites with these calculations and support Hazops studies on critical unit operations.
  • Responsible to develop and build process simulations, calculations and dynamic and steady state process modelling tools for our Polymer processes (polymerization kinetics, thermodynamics, distillation, devolatilisation, rheology, heat and mass transfer and solids handling etc.). Develop simulations for technical and economical evaluation of potential new technologies.  Work with senior process engineers, universities and other partners to identify proper modelling tools. Lead the validation of models with plant data, lab testing, plant trials or equipment trials. Consolidate and apply the modelling tools globally at our sites and for projects. Identify and advise on the optimal software platform for operating the tools. Develop training tutorials to train site engineers on process modelling tools.
  • Support improvement, expansion and debottlenecking projects to support the growth agenda.  Support project teams and Global Technology with process simulations, calculations and dynamic and steady state process modelling to correctly define, size and design engineering packages.
  • Lead to identify options for sites for costs reductions, optimize energy consumption, debottleneck options and improvement in process control. Support site process engineers using process modelling tools effectively. Support Global Technology, RDC and R&D on options to implement new formulations and reduce risks of scale up from lab to plant by performing process simulations and process modelling.
  • Built and maintain a global network with sites, Technology colleagues, Global R&D, other INEOS experts, universities, design institutes, process safety experts and engineering companies. Travel (15% to 30%) to production facilities worldwide, other internal/ external contacts and for Global meetings as required. Acquire, study and maintain know-how through literature and contacts in universities and design institutes.
  • Assure high quality communication on complex technical information. Lead data collection, analysis, find relationships and comparison of alternatives. Technical information from simulations/ calculations/ modelling needs to be translated in meaningful and manageable information for decision making by different stake holders. Able to make timely and well-reasoned recommendations.
  • While working as a specialist resource on Process Modelling develop a broad and deep understanding of our Polymers manufacturing processes and product technologies. And develop and grow to become PS, SBC, and/or ABS Polymers expert.
