Environmental Engineer

The Acetyls Business Unit is one of the world's leading manufacturers of acetic acid and its derivatives, and owns & deploys its leading technology in Europe, Asia and US.

INEOS Hull Site is the European manufacturing facility for the Acetyls Business Unit and is of significant strategic importance to the Global Business, with a focus on Manufacturing Petrochemicals as well as Research & Technology. Our core product range is Acetic Acid and Acetic Anhydride.

It is core to the role to uphold, promote and demonstrate adherence to the INEOS 20 behavioural & process safety principles, as well as the life saving rules in all activities undertaken.  This means the role has accountability for the development of many SHE systems and processes, in the form of local procedures and practices, that incorporate current legislation and company policies.

The Environment Engineer is critical to business continuity as its main focus is compliance, with environmental legislation, health and safety legislation and INEOS requirements whilst actively promoting environmental good practice.  The Environmental Engineer is subject matter expert for environmental matters at Hull site and is part of the SHE team that upholds the values of the safety, health and environmental policy approved by the INEOS acetyls board.

The Environmental engineer will be the point of contact for legislative compliance for all environmental matters.  This means the post holder will be responsible for maintaining good working relationships with the regulator, local environmental and conservation groups.  In turn, the environmental engineering will be responsible for reporting back up through the line to the SHE Manager and the local Leadership Team, making them aware of INEOS environmental policies and site environmental performance, including changes in legislation and current INEOS and industry practices.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage environmental management programme and the environmental management system.
  • Subject matter expert for environmental legislation and INEOS environmental standards.
  • Operational owner of the INEOS Waste Management contract.
  • Support assurance processes and self-verification systems on site.
  • Manage waste minimisation plan for the INEOS Acetyls
  • Manage the greenhouse gas emissions permit under the environmental trading scheme (ETS) and coordinate the relevant information for verification.
  • Responsible for the relevant areas coordination for ISO-9001
  • Responsible for ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and lead for internal environmental audits. Duty includes reporting and updating the BSI Auditor of any EA notifications.
  • Responsible for developing the environmental strategy & the forward agenda for sustaining environmental performance.
  • Champion environmental improvements via the Asset plan and Capex programs.
  • Assist in the creation and management of the Carbon Plan for the INEOS Acetyls.
  • Lead greenhouse gas emissions and energy management for the site.
  • Manage the site environmental permit and prepare any correspondence to the regulator or applications for variations that may be required and reporting of any permit breaches.

Education and Qualifications:

  • A degree in environmental management / chemical engineering or similar with essential experience in the oil, gas or petrochemical business.
  • A minimum of 2 years in an oil, gas or petrochemical business
  • Experience in environmental or operations management.
  • Working knowledge of key environmental legislation.
  • Experience of working with the UK Environment Agency
  • Auditing experience.
  • Working knowledge of basic health, safety, security and crisis and continuity management legislation.

Technical Skills:

  • Environmental abatement techniques.
  • Environmental risk assessment.
  • Environmental and social impact assessment.
  • Water and wastewater management.
  • Air emission sampling and monitoring.

Behavioural Skills:

  • Keep the SHE Manager and Hull Leadership Team aware of INEOS environmental policies, site environmental performance, changes in legislation and current INEOS and industry practice.
  • Act as the primary contact between the site and the UK Environment Agency and maintain good working relationships with the regulator, local environmental and conservation groups.
  • Provide training on environmental permit requirements and wider environmental responsibilities.
  • Submit monthly, quarterly and annual environmental data to the regulator and the INEOS Board of directors and ExCo.
