Environmental Engineer (Water / Solid Waste)

The Environmental Engineer (Water / Solid Waste) is responsible to ensure plant (petrochemical / ABS plastics) compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations, corporate environmental guidelines, and plant initiatives for maintaining good community relations through understanding, monitoring, and documenting compliance.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Design, implement, and monitor site programs and process conditions to maintain compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Provide the necessary written reports to local, state, and federal agencies at the required frequency.
  • Provide required notifications to authorities when environmental deviations occur.
  • Perform emissions calculations to support spill reporting.
  • Review and agree upon any unplanned emission from the site.
  • Review all written and electronic records collected that document compliance.
  • Monitor performance of the plant’s water and waste activities including NPDES permit compliance and RCRA hazardous waste shipments  
  • Develop and implement strategies to assist the site’s production, maintenance, and technical support areas’ environmental compliance efforts.
  • On-call support for environmental incidents during night shifts and weekends. 
  • Supervise contract waste coordinators for plant trash, scrap metal, empty drums, pallets, hazardous waste, and used oil.
  • Manage RCRA hazardous waste, non-hazardous wastes, and universal wastes including maintaining annual RCRA hazardous waste training and DOT Training (triannual) to sign manifests.
  • Submit all necessary reports to the regulatory authorities.
    • Haz Waste Generator’s Report
    • CEMS RATA Testing and general CEMS monitoring
    • Quarterly CEMS Report
    • Heat exchange sampling
    • NPDES Permit Sampling and Reporting
    • DMR QA Study for outside analytical lab
    • Stormwater Sampling
    • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan Audit, Assessments, Annual Review
    • Annual MSD One Time Discharge Permit            
    • Corrective Action reports with third party contractor
    • Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan
    • RCRA Drum permit renewal
    • ISO 14001 documentation
  • Review new state and federal water and waste  regulations to determine their impact on plant operations.
  • Develop comments on proposed environmental regulations to minimize adverse impacts to the plant.
  • Negotiate permit conditions with regulatory agencies to minimize adverse impacts to the plant.
  • Secondary environmental issue liason between the site and the community.  Assist co-worker with the following activities as necessary.
  • Investigate and document all external complaints (i.e. noise, odor, dusting)
  • Update information for public advisory group meetings on the site’s environmental performance
  • Malfunction Reporting, Spill Calculations/Reporting and follow-up with agencies.

Training, Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Bachelors degree in environmental, chemical or mechanical engineering.
  • Preferably at least 3 years of related experience in environmental compliance (RCRA, NPDES, Title V, MACT, ISO 14001).
  • Must pass a post offer drug screen and physical. We are proud to be a drug-free workplace.

  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, including with governmental agencies.
  • Excellent written / oral negotiating skills, especially with regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage progress and deliver multiple and competing priorities.
  • Work and interact effectively as a team member.
  • Organizes work effectively and use available resources.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a systematic approach to problem definition and solution development.
  • Adherence to the site 20 Principles for Managing Behavioral Safety and Process Safety.


Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity and Environmental Factors

  • Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading. Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens, and to adjust focus.
  • The worker must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound.
  • The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
