Business Context
The O&P USA business includes the product lines Ethylene, Propylene, Butadiene, Polypropylene and High Density Polyethylene. Manufacturing sites include Chocolate Bayou Works (Alvin, TX), Battleground Manufacturing Complex (LA Porte, TX), and Carson, (Carson, CA), with a division office in League City, TX.
The Main Purpose of the Role
The Energy Optimization Engineer manages oversight of the overall energy and utilities use at Chocolate Bayou. This includes responsibility for budgeting and optimizing utility systems such as steam, natural gas, electricity, water, air, nitrogen and condensate. The position requires the competency to lead technical and operational professionals by influence toward the achievement of business goals and management of rapidly changing priorities to meet the site performance contract. The role is the owner of the site energy balance and is responsible for several monthly accounting/closing activities. The successful candidate will work as a key member of the C4/Infrastructure Team, reporting to the CBW Utilities/Infrastructure Resource Team Leader. This role affords high visibility through regular interaction with INEOS O&P management and diverse groups within the CBW site.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ)
- Promote, ensure and sustain commitment to operate assets with no harm to people and to the environment by visibly demonstrating Safety Leadership
- Support assets’ SHE activities, meetings, and inspections to ensure the assets’ compliance with plant policies and procedures, OSHA, PSM, etc.
- Ensure completion of relevant Management of Change (MOC) and compliance action items
- Monitor quality and supply requirements for utilities provided to CBW (e.g. ETP Gas, nitrogen, natural gas, and electricity) and communicate opportunities for improvements to proper parties
- Support SHE compliance audits
Financial
- Responsible for energy and utilities annual budgeting and development of performance plan including monthly reporting of variances from plan.
- Develop annual plan and provide monthly input to site steam/power profit and loss statement
- Conduct monthly financial closing for energy and utilities for CBW site
- Responsible for providing closing data for internal on-site customer term sheets and monitoring performance within contractual boundaries
- Support financial and commercial team in the assessment of variables affecting assets variable cost.
- Understand contracts in place and responsible for reviewing/approving monthly invoices
- Provide summary and recommendations for improvement and variance analysis of energy plan/metrics to CBW Site Leadership, Asset teams, and operating areas
Optimization
- Develop, implement, and monitor site energy plan based on production plan
- Monitor and optimize energy and Utilities usage at CBW
- Forecast daily natural gas and power usages and assess variances
- Interface with Operations team in the planning of outages and TAR’s in order to effectively forecast utilities and energy usage, budgeting and purchases
- Interface with Business Optimization to optimize energy supply costs
- Own and manage the site energy balance (Visual Mesa model) to drive optimization, troubleshooting, and planning to minimize exposures from operational deviations and maximize revenue.
- Drive the optimization of CBW steam supply and steam generation sources by using computer tools (Visual Mesa, process modeling, etc.) and frequent interfaces with operating areas
- Support operating areas in the optimization of assets such as: flares, steam system, compressors, furnaces, etc.
- Monitor/budget chemical usage for steam production
- Support applicable Six Sigma Projects associated to Energy, Utilities, and asset optimization
- Develop relationships with local utility representatives
- Support and interface with INEOS O&P Energy Procurement manager and INEOS Energy Triangle in the development and implementation of metrics, initiatives, contracts and best practices for the sites
- Responsible for the interface with electrical service providers and the LaaR program for CBW
- Responsible for the completion and timely submittal of compliance forms to the US Energy Information Administration, Department of Energy and ERCOT
Leadership
- Sponsor, gate-keep and develop projects that would reduce or optimize energy and utility costs
- Coordinate and drive energy reduction goals
- Support project teams on the consideration and assessment of options delivering energy improvements projects for the site (e.g. Improvements to Boilers, Cogen).
- Interface with technology team, capital team and business development team in the assessment of growth options and energy requirements to support long term strategy
- Identify and develop plan to bridge gap and remove energy and utilities supply bottlenecks for the CBW site and operating areas
- Provide single point of accountability for demineralized water production contract and performance
- Support CBW water conservation projects
- Support applicable Six Sigma Projects associated to Energy, Utilities, and asset optimization
- Effectively communicate to the resource team and the operations organization deliverables and requirements to support business goals
- Coordinate and influence communication unilaterally through correct organizational structure such as Shift Superintendents, WTLs, etc.
- Lead by influence the resources available within the organization and the CBW site to assure objectives/goals are delivered
- Step-up for Utilities/Infrastructure Resource Team Leader as required
Skills And Knowledge Required
Education and experience
- Engineering degree or equivalent/relevant manufacturing experience required.
- Seven to Ten (7-10) years of experience in engineering and/or manufacturing environment with proven track record in the area of steam and energy optimization.
