The post holder is responsible for devising, developing, fabricating and testing new electrode coatings and transferring these from laboratory development scale to production scale.
Accountabilities:
- Devise novel methods and recipes for the fabrication and application of electrode coatings to trial, documenting and improving both methodology and coatings.
- Lead project, experimental and development plans, including plant trials, ensuring full compliance with SHE principles.
- Work with the wider business team to provide data packages in support of sales and marketing activity.
- Provide advice and technical support to troubleshoot and drive improvements in cost and quality.
- Where required devise, build and operate appropriate equipment to enable the production of new coatings.
Qualifications and Experience:
- PhD in chemistry or similar (e.g. material science) plus at least 5 years’ experience working in an R&D laboratory, primarily developing electrocatalyst coatings.
- Excellent knowledge of materials, ways of making electrocatalysts, and applying these to electrodes and characterising them.
- Track-record of delivering coatings into industrial electrolysis applications, preferably alkali water electrolysis.
- Experience of transferring small-scale developments into a pilot line and larger (up to 1+ m2).
- Extensive knowledge of inorganic and physical chemistry involving transition and valve metals and oxides, precious metals and conducting supports.
- Knowledge of inks, paints and coating processes including critical characteristics such as rheology, formulation and additives.
- Extensive knowledge of physical characterisation tools such as XRF, SEM, EDX and XRD.
- Good electrochemical knowledge relating to the testing of alkali water electrolysis electrodes including performance accelerated wear, cell reversal and load cycling.
- Able to organise and effectively communicate complex activities to the wider business.
- Highly creative and tenacious with excellent interpersonal skills.
- The applicant MUST be a non-smoker due to working with certain substances that have restrictive safety rules associated with them.
