The Location: This opportunity is located in Decatur, Alabama, USA
This entry level chemical technician has the responsibilities of safely loading hopper cars and trucks with final products including operation and maintenance of associated equipment, while acquiring necessary skills to advance through the Operations Progression System to a minimum of Tech Level 3 Chemical Operator within the expected time required.
Accountability: Skills Acquisition and Learning
- Commit to learn, understand, support, and participate in the site Safety, Health, and Environmental Excellence Principles and Life Saving Rules
- Completion of Chemical Technician qualification through progression levels 1, 2, and 3 at a minimum
- Participate in self-driven and departmental training
- Adhere to all procedures, policies, and guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned which may not be specifically listed in the position description, but which are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s skills classification of work.
Accountability: Loading, Testing, Equipment Maintenance, and Production
- Perform production unit responsibilities to achieve scheduled production and daily activities
- Load hopper cars and trucks
- Perform rail switches
- Unload MMA and Mineral Oil trucks and railcars
- Operate all associated equipment - e.g., bins/transfer systems, shuttle wagon, fork truck, etc.
- Assist preparation of equipment for maintenance, permit management, equipment lockout, and systems preparations
- Assist in routine start-up and shutdown of reactors and systems
- Perform minor maintenance
- Monitor process performance (samples, levels, temperature, etc.)
- Comply with ISO standards and execute work in accordance with quality standards
- Maintain detailed and accurate written records relative to the role

- Identify/troubleshoot related process issues and work toward solutions
- Interact effectively in a team-oriented culture with multi-functional teams to achieve business results
- Preserve high standards of housekeeping and organization
- Communicate effectively and appropriately by radio, email, telephone, and face-to-face
Level of Education & Experience
- High School diploma/GED at a minimum
- College or College level certification preferred
- Chemical or manufacturing plant experience preferred
Technical Skills
- Requires a commitment to advance through Operation Progression System to Tech Level 3 minimum
- Ability to learn process, procedures, and equipment in a timely manner
- Functional in computers and software associated with role.
- Mechanical aptitude
- Basic math skills
- Basic understanding and respect of the importance of safety and environmental concepts
Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity Requirements, and Environmental Conditions
- Ascend and descend stairs, bend, stoop, kneel and utilize fine motor dexterity
- Work 12-hour rotating shifts schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime
- Work inside and outside in all seasons
- Operate vehicles, work with automated machinery, and around chemicals.
- Wear full face respirator
- Perform confined space entry.
- Wear steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, long sleeves, hearing protection, fall protection and other PPE as warranted.
- Communicate using radio
- This position is considered a “safety critical job” which requires continuous training and for the employee to be always alert, able to concentrate on their task at hand, and not impaired by medications or any other mental condition which adversely affects alertness, concentration, or judgment.
