INEOS Nitriles is a global chemicals business with sales volume of 1200 kte and revenue in excess of $3 billion.  The Nitriles business has 2 manufacturing operations in the US and 1 in Europe along with offices and headquarters in Rolle, Switzerland and Aurora, Illinois near Chicago. The Nitriles Business primary products include acrylonitrile, hydrogen cyanide, and acetonitrile.  Additionally, Nitriles also has a manufacturing operation that produces catalyst for internal use at the Lima Site, globally within Ineos, and for other Acrylonitrile producers. The INEOS Nitriles Plant at Lima is part of an industrial campus which includes a refinery and chemical complex. INEOS share services, utilities, products, and feedstocks with four adjacent manufacturing facilities:  Nutrien (ammonia, urea, nitric acid), Fort Amanda Specialties (chelates), Ashland (1,4-butanediol), and Husky Refining (propylene, fuels, and refined oil products).

The engineering position at the Lima Catalyst plant uses their technical expertise to improve the catalyst manufacturing process and is a great developmental position for commercial and R&D positions.   Through projects and process support the incumbent works to improve SHE performance, reliability, product yields, product quality, production rates, and production costs.  This position works from broad objectives to formulate, develop, and execute a wide variety of complex process engineering assignments.  The incumbent investigates new problems and opportunities and recommends course of action or solution and is the primary person responsible for the execution of any process related projects.  The incumbent interacts daily with Operations, Technical, Maintenance and QC on issues of importance to the unit.  The incumbent will be asked to periodically work with R&D during new product developments and process changes and may get involved in assignments in the Nitriles Manufacturing areas at Lima and/or R&D in Aurora. 

The engineer maintains knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the unit and may act as an alternate for the process assistants or Catalyst Manufacturing manager in their absence.  The position assumes a leadership role in many aspects of Process Safety Management.  Success in this position enables the incumbent to be considered for positions of higher responsibility in Operations, Engineering, R&D, or commercial assignments in the Technologies group in Aurora.  

The Total Quality Management System shall be incorporated into all job activities.  All job activities should be executed in a safe and efficient manner consistent with the INEOS 20 Principles.  Responsible for operating envelope compliance per the 20 Principles. This position is responsible for the process engineer responsibilities and asset integrity management through the development, maintenance, and periodic review of process safety information, critical instrument list, critical fixed equipment list, PSV’s, operating envelopes, etc. as set out in the INEOS 20P.  

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Becomes a technical expert in the catalyst process and leads and participates in all plant process engineering activities.
  • Continuously identifies and executes improvements to plant operations, safety and environmental performance through day-to-day activities and recommendations for optimized unit conditions.
  • Takes active ownership of assigned PSM Elements to drive and progress continuous improvement and compliance for the site.
  • Serves as the asset engineer per the INEOS 20 Principles for the catalyst plant including ownership of Operating Envelopes, Management of Change reviews, leads and participates in Incident Investigations, leads and participates in PHA reviews.
  • Establishes and executes process improvement plans for manufacturing including safety and environmental improvements.
  • Collaborates on technology with R&D personnel including trial development and execution. 
  • Provides technical expertise in the design, specification, selection, and operation of equipment along with providing guidance on safe operating limits.
  • Proposes and executes capital projects for the catalyst plant including development of the individual funding requests and the annual capex budget for submittal.
  • Organizes field tests and consults with other specialists outside of the facility to solve operating issues.  Provides emergency troubleshooting and operations support.
  • Provides controls support to the catalyst process.
  • Provides support to additional site and other Nitriles Manufacturing initiatives and assignments.
  • Ensures all work is done in a safe manner consistent with company, local, state, federal and health, safety and environmental regulations and procedures.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • BS Engineering (CHE preferred)
  • 5-10 years’ experience in chemical plant or refinery
  • State Professional Engineer License preferred but not required

Skills/Competencies

  • Experience with mechanical and control system design, project management, and instrumentation
  • This position requires an understanding of the plant processes and operations along with utilization of engineering knowledge
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills
  • Good communication skills to be able to communicate with all levels of people inside and outside the organization
  • Must relate well to others and be capable of effectively leading and influencing multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to learn and stay abreast of industry changes
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks in parallel
  • Although this role is not a formal team leader, the incumbent will be required to periodically lead teams or oversee INEOS or contract staff in support of project and process work
