Asset Manager Utilities & Wastewater Treatment Area

INEOS Joliet is a leading producer of chemical intermediates. At our site in Channahon, Illinois (about 40 miles southwest of Chicago) we produce three products - Purified Isophthalic Acid (PIA), Trimellitic Anhydride (TMA) and Maleic Anhydride (MAN).

Main Purpose

The Asset Manager will lead and develop the team to deliver sustainable, competitive manufacturing performance at a competitive cost while ensuring safety, compliance and Asset integrity.  Key accountabilities include: 

  • Ensures appropriate safety, health and environmental management systems are in place, complied with, and improvements in standards are developed so that the Asset license to operate is maintained and supports future Asset development.
  • Aligns Asset management with business strategy to prepare and implement projects to deliver necessary improvements.
  • At the Asset level, prepares and delivers annual budget for output, costs, quality and capital spending and ensure appropriate controls are in place to achieve them.
  • Runs the Asset in the most efficient manner and proactively monitors for areas for improvements
  • Ensures personnel development is pursued across the Asset so that individual capability is enhanced and aligned to business objectives.

The successful candidate will lead, influence, and move the Utilities and Wastewater Treatment organization to the next level of performance in the delivery of safety, reliability, cost and personnel development to deliver area and business objectives. 

The Asset Manager reports to the INEOS Joliet Site Plant Manager and leads technical staff, operations support staff and operations personnel responsible to deliver 24/7 operations in accordance to INEOS Life Savings Rues and 20 Behavioural & Safety Principles.

Responsibilities AND Accountabilities

Accountability 1:Strive for excellence in SHE.

  • Fosters and drives the 20 Safety Principles related to process and behavioral safety, as well as the Life Savings Rules, for all employees and contractors.
  • Promotes and sponsors participation on safety programs and committees to initiatives
  • Continuously stimulates employees’ safety awareness and invites them to make suggestions for improvements in their own working area.
  • Stimulates the awareness for process safety in all levels from the Asset Team.
  • Stimulates and ensures the active use of alarm management.
  • Stimulates and ensures participation in Hazop/PHA sessions for all levels in the Asset Team, including routine audits.
  • Ensures the Asset Team operates the Asset within threshold values with regard to the environmental legislation.
  • Ensures that all safety lessons learned are internally distributed and incorporated in safety procedures or good working practices.
  • Ensures Asset meets the expectations of the INEOS AsCare program and perform routine audits of the Asset.
  • Serves in a Leadership capacity during Emergency Response or Incident Command scenarios
  • Promotes operating envelopes sustainability, tracking, reporting and deviation assessments.
  • Promotes and allocates resources to deliver mechanical integrity of Assets and protective systems.

Accountability 2:Lead the entire Asset Team.

  • Guarantees a uniform adherence to site INEOS expectations, SHEQ, and HR policies.
  • Promotes open communication within the entire Asset Team and support team, including facilitating area meetings, regular briefings to the Asset team, planning meetings, etc.
  • Seeks and keeps an open communication with other Leadership Team members.
  • Stimulates cross-functional communication in order to improve interfaces between departments and Assets.
  • Ensures well established training programs and sound evaluations are in place for Operations personnel to ensure continued development of personnel to meet required functions and tasks while further developing individual capabilities; this includes ensuring availability of refresher training programs and job specific certifications.
  • Supports talent recruitment and develops succession planning for the Asset team in order to maintain a high level of process and technical expertise.
  • Ensures that area objectives are clear, communicated and understood across all levels of the team, including awareness of the short-term and long-term Asset objectives, and what role they play in meeting them.
  • Coordinates, prioritizes and follows through on staff actions (performance contract; yearly objectives, action tracking from meetings).
  • Communicates information shared by other Assets and stakeholders.

Strives to meet Asset reliability and availability targets.

Accountability 3: Asset Reliability to meet the Sales & Operations planning and quality metrics, as well as stakeholder, business & regulatory requirements.

  • Supports and/or participates in bi-weekly S&OP meetings with commercial department to discuss and align area needs that will enable delivery of product lines via collaboration among Production, Sales, Procurement, Logistics and/or other departments as necessary.
  • Prioritizes and decides on modifications to increase plant capacity and reliability or to reduce costs.
  • Ensures continuous quality control.
  • Maintains a successful reliability team.

Accountability 4:Maintain focus on EBITDA,  fixed and variable costs, budget control, and reporting for assigned Asset.

  • Ensures submission of timely budget updates/requests for significant expenditures (Capex and Exceptional Maintenance) to keep the plant condition up to actual industry standards.
  • Develops capital program ensuring that project priority, cost and time scale is in line with agreed business objectives.
    • Identify capital investment requirements for Asset replacement, enhancement
    • Identify capital investment requirements to meet business objectives
    • Ensure capital investment programs are on budget and on program
  • Challenges the Asset Team to optimize specific consumption factors.
  • Thinks creatively/outside the box in order to eliminate activity within the Asset not creating added value.
  • Focuses the attention of the Asset Team on fixed and variable cost analysis and stimulates them to keep generating new cost reduction ideas.
  • Explores creative staffing opportunities to ensure approved headcount is optimized and overtime is reduced.
  • Stimulates creative challenges and innovative ideas that lead to waste elimination or optimize efficiency across the Asset.
  • Actively involved in developing strategic projects, like organizational changes, eliminating bottlenecking and/or growth projects across the facility.

Skills & Knowledge Required

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering discipline
  • 10+ Years operations or technical experience in a manufacturing environment, Petro-Chemical Industry experience preferred
  • 5+ years supervisory experience.
  • A strong understanding of a wide range of disciplines/functions (mechanical, electrical, process and control engineering, commissioning, S&OP planning, logistics and customer service).

Skills/Competencies

  • Knowledgeable of petrochemical industry best practices (Process safety, Safe Work Permitting, etc.)
  • Must have a strong, demonstrated commitment to safety

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work around and on industrial equipment. including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, as well as perform office tasks requiring repetitive use of hands.  The employee must walk, stand and travel by car or other means and be able to work in a variety of environments that include both fieldwork and deskwork.  Minimum requirements include:

  • Maintaining constant awareness of personal safety and the safety of all other personnel.  This includes knowledge of unit operation, procedures, and rules.
  • Being able to work in a safety sensitive environment that includes large rotating equipment and hazardous chemicals. 
  • Must be able to withstand both winter and summer temperatures while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • In addition, must be comfortable working in a loud environment that could include exposure to fumes / odors or vibration from surrounding equipment.
  • Being able to ascend and descend a barrel ladder with continuous vertical length of up to 35 feet. 
  • Being able to climb and descend stairs up to a total structure height of 80 feet.
  • Being physically able to wear and navigate through the unit with a respirator if needed.
  • Being able to pick up a 50 lb object such as a fire extinguisher or a large book/binder.
  • Being able to work at a desk and operate routine items such as a computer and calculator.
